N95: Nightmode vs. flash

You are at a party, bar or a other place with bad light-conditions and want to take some pictures with your N95 or other cameraphone. However, it’s dark and you don’t know which mode you should choose. Autotmode with flash or nightmode. Without testing this two modes before, it’s a difficult question because some pictures could be overexposed or under-exposed. However, I’ve made here some photo-samples which will answer your question.

The lighting-conditions become better and better from top to bottom.

Verdict
How you can see, it always depends on the light conditional and on the distance to the object. If there is no light you should use the flash. However, don’t go to close to the object because you could over-exposed the object. If there is light you should use the nightmode.

As the LED “flash” of the N95 only may illuminate a distance of 2 to 3 meters, the results when taking images of parties in the evening are quite disappointing.

So I tried to use an additional flash that is triggered by built in flashs of DigiCams – like the METZ 28 CS-2. But I discovered that these slave flashs do not interpret the LED flash of the N95 as something to trigger the slave.

I am curious to see if someone made better experience with other slave flash models (perhaps Soligor DG-340 AZ?).

tpmjg, the flash intensity and pulse of the LED flash is way too low to be picked up by flash trigger. I would not even equate the N95 LED to be even close to being a real flash, rather a slow sync fill in light.

for N93 or N93i users, u can vary the flash intensity by just adjusting the amount of optical zoom used. With every notch of optical zoom used, the LED flash intensity pickup is slightly less. This is how I get very nice exposed images of close up subjects without blowout typical of close range LED flash types.
