Nokia N97 hit by software bugs
Posted by Ibrahim Jogee in Firmware, N-Series, N97, News, Nokia, S60 5th EditionAccording to Mobile Today many Nokia N97 owners have returned their handset due to software glitches, particularly a problem with the backlight not turning on. Retail staff from Carphone Warehouse, 3 and Vodafone claimed that they have been experiencing a high level of returns due to the software problems on the device. Nokia released the new firmware earlier this month which included over 100 improvements including many bug fixes. Nevertheless, this firmware update is still faulty and not as stable as it should be.

N97 is full of disappointments. There are 100 of bugs still after the update and many industrial design problems. There are scratches coming on the camera lens due to bad lid design.
I have a white color N97. The keypad backlight lights in the normal lighting conditions and they glow white. And the background button is also white. So you can imagine. …..
We cant see any letters.
The black N97 keyboard is horrible. The letters are so thin that they look like they are worn-out and faded… Not readable at all…
Nokia – shame on you..
I agree i purchased the N97 in black – very disappointed.
Well the n97 got overall excellent reviews with some points of criticism… because it’s being reviewed as a business phone… I guess everyone saying that they are disappointed by the n97 probably expected nokia to go down the candy-lollypop-iphone road…
Hello,
No negetive things here after update all still works 100%
ive had mine less than 1 month and its full of faults, lost all contacts twice, does not unlock, problem connecting on the move, charging problem so its not just people who want business – I just want to be able to call family and friends and check the internet
nokia should never have released the phone with so many problems. whatever you say about the iphone its much better and more stable.
After the latest firmware update v11, I too have the unlock problem on my N97 phone, when pressing the side button, then the unlock screen comes to put your code in I have notice here if you hit the cancel key on the touch screen the phone freezes and I never had this problem with firmware v10.
Love my N97. It reboots now and then, but who cares.
With the features that it packs I can live with that, besides I know that Nokia will release regular firmware updates to fix the problems.
Can’t say that for the iPhone now can you?
@ Sameer Chavan – “industrial design problems”?? Whatever man – I know someone who has an almighty iPhone 3G. Less than 2 months old and the back is already cracked badly without any heavy handling or abuse. Now THAT’s an industrial design problem.
Build quality on the N97 is fantastic – it doesn’t even feel like a slider when it’s closed.
At least the N97 is a serious leap forward for the N-Series.
The iPhone 3Gs is like OMG WOW ANOTHER iPhone… that can do like 2 extra things. Whoopee.
Bought the N97 for my husband during our 1st yr anniversary. I do agreed that N97’s software bugs are kinda annoying, esp he cant use the USB to charge his phone and the backlight.
However, after the firmware upgrade, it’s good. He never complaint, no hang, no reset, and he loves it.
Omar im watching youuuuuu
The difference between N97 and IPhone is that Apple test and make sure most bugs are removed before code is released. If there’s a bug they dont release the code …. simples.. Nokia are bunch of techies that release a phone that is still 2 years behind the user experience on iPhone…. I dont see any of this sort of post on an iPhone site there it is all I want more more more… On Nokia it is more like I wish the stuff I have got would work.
Oh any any touchphone software that puts ‘exit’ at the bottom of a menu option which you always have to scroll down to use…. I mean come on Symbian guys get it right… there is one thing every user will need to do with an application and that is ‘EXIT’ why not make it the first option in the list
A lack of thinking methinks…..
i got my Nokia N97 from my boyfriend as a birthday gift. i like most of its features and from the aesthetic point of view.
evn aftr updting d sftwre still reboooots! suxxxxx not satsfied
Well I’ve had the phone 3 weeks . So far just one or two minor niggles , couple of freezes ( once after transfering 19 gig of music and video, so I consider that accepable) and also a couple of problems with Facebook app, which deletion and re-install sorted . Scrolling is smooth, keyboard works fine after a bit of use ( it’s a bloody phone not a laptop !) Camera is fine, although being very careful with slider due to reports of scratches. Photo viewer beta works superbly, good as iphone. Snaptu great and useful app. Email works fine and overall very pleased with N97, and I’m sure with software updates it will only improve(as N95 8gig did which is the phone my N97 has replaced. Battery life is a bit poor, but as the novelty of the phones features hasn’t worn off yet and I’m on the web all day, I think it will last for a couple of days with ‘normal’ use, also found a spare battery on web for about £9 and will buy one if phone keeps eating power. Think my phone on software 11 is about 8/10 but as soon as a couple of updates are available will get even better .
the Nokia N97 is very stylish and more rugged than the N91. I own both the N91 and N97, both are good phones but i like the style of the N97
I too am disappointed. On paper the phone seems really good but the software bugs are maddening. The wake up button has improved over the original version but is still wide off the mark. Phone goes to never never land when answering.. I still do not understand when you must connect to the web if you already have the maps on the phone already. It is extremely difficult to chose the access point and the applications that can or can’t use WiFi rather than expensive 3g or edge services.. memory management is haphazard. Playing media files on the move is painful because every time there is a movement the sound is interrupted….
I can go on and on. I thought I would be gaining by replacing an iphone for the nokia. I am greatly disappointed. I wonder if anybody in Finland is hearing these comments and they will do anything about it! We will all end up being subservient to appel!!!
I too must state that I am very very dissapointed with my N97. I really wish I had listened to my friends and bought an I phone. Thing is I had experienced 18 months of using a N95 8gb which never missed a beat. Only reason I bought the N97 is that I assumed it would have all the great features and the stability of the 95, but give me more! How wrong was I?.
I find it insulting that nokia deemed the phone resady for release when it is so ridden with bugs! They can’t really care about their customers or they’d have spent more than 5 minutes testing the software and realised it wasn’t ready yet and could have held back the release!
I have owned 7 nokias in succession and been mostly very pleased but must say that if they I am now selling my N97 and buying an I phone and I won’t be going back to Nokia again!
I don’t want to own the phone for a year and spend all that time hating it, so that nokia can get it right just as I get to the point where I’m about to buy another one and the phone goes out of production anyway!
I honestly have seen so many bugs on my N97 that I couldn’t possibly list them
all.
But jjust for example:
I’ve had the charging problem,
crashing at least 4 times a day problem,
the keylock won’t disnegage when trying to answer a call problem,
the picture viewer giving “a system error has occured please restart your device” message,
the screen won’t display the messaging menu properly when opening messaging, ,
the maps upgrade to version 3 now gets no gps signal problem!
I could go on, but I won’t, it wouldn’t be so bad if these things happened once a week, but most of you will have seen them many times a day as I have.
So when you take the bugs combine them with some of the plane dumb things they’ve done to the software and all in all you get one expensive technologically advanced great big lemon!!!
Sort your life out nokia!!!
As far back as i can remember, i have always been a fan of Nokia. Never had a problem with any Nokia phones have used in the past. My N97 has locked me out. I can only receive calls on it. I use my phone for work, not been able to use it, is costing me money. Can’t take it to the shop because am at work, will do in the morning.
Nokia, you need to wake up, these are serious issues concerning your ‘Product’, main product. You need to give your N97 customers more feedbacks on software and firmware and any other defects N97 might have or encounter at a later date and how it would be rectified. I don’t want to go on the internet to find out was going on. Nokia text text text would do.

NOKIA N97 is just freaking waste of money. I do trust with nokia, but this time i just waste 1000 bucks. Blackberry and iphone are best phones in the market. They provide bug free platforms.
Being a software embedded developer, its hard for me to use Nokia N97, I cant amaziong about the user who bought this stuff…!and guess Nokia don’t even have enough application.
My next phone must be Blackberry, atleast robustness platform. i dont care about screen.
People if you do care about fun and applciations, then IPhone is best deal.
and if you like business things, then Blackberry is best choice.
I don’t understand how people are facing problem with N97. I am using it since last 5month very roughly. It even fell down thrice.but working well.
I’ve had nothing but problems with my N97. Bought it when it was first released. Was fine for about a month (apart from the unlocking to answer calls issue). Received the 1st Nokia Software update, updated and then found that I could not use any web based applications, although email fine. Took back to store where the could see problem but no reason for it. Then the 2nd Software update arrived. Updated and no I cant receive or make calls and can only text and email. When calling the phone the dial tone is correct just the phone does not ring. I’m taking it back and swapping it for a like for like phone. Very very disappointed!!! Has great features but cant do the simple things that phones are supposed to do…like call people!!!
thats it! im taking it back. there isnt enough space here to list all my phone’s problems. ive only had it for a month.
such a pity. its a really great phones without the bugs.
All I want to do is upload a movie avi, divx, mp, whatever it just seems way to hard also the soft ware just dosent work loaded the cd updated it an still no joy
I have never used a phone other than Nokia. But the N 97 is totally disgusting. Pricing is in line with I Phone but it is undoubtedly a poor performer. Inspite of my attempts on firmware it hangs quite often. And I am also suffering from many of the listed problems above.
The plating on the ring around the body of the phone is already pealed off.
Shame on you Nokia. Here ends my brand loyalty. No more Nokia Phones for me!
is somebody know unlocking operator code for nokia n97 from scotlands opertaor “3″??
If someone have it I can pay for it

Hi, I am having bad experience with my handset Nokia N97. It was my big mistake to got this phone with my upgrade. cheers
I did enjoy N97 for a few months then it started… The facebook software almost never works properly on this phone – problems with memory, ‘internal problem – please restart your phone’, etc. The next thing is that in 1 out of 5 restarts all messages are gone. I switched N97 off few days ago and, well, basically the phone has not worked since then. I cannot use most of the applications, it turns off when I try to call someone, the desktop is sometimes white, sometimes blue (instead of being black), in the middle of writing an SMS the SMS application quits working and the sms is saved in “working” file… ANd there is so much more wrong things with that handset! (Just to mention a funny one, recently it shows that it is in the process of charging the battery – the point is it shows that even if I am walking with the phone in the park). Used nokia products for 12 years, it is the highest time to become a loyal customer to another brand.
Ive had endless problems with the phone. Sometimes it turns off during a call for no apparent reasons. A real problem when driving as you then have to pull over to restart it and enter the pin etc. I use the voice activation on hand free. After a reboot it works for awhile and then wont dial alternative numbers. It often freezes and the only solution is to take the battery out and restart it. Some things work better after the upgrade but these seem to be only those operational quirks like having to reset date an time after each crash rather than the actual bugs.
Im really dissapointed. I used to have a phone running windows CE and that was a 1000 times better.
Nokia n97 is a rubbish phone, everytime im downloading something from the ovi store it keep crashes and the phone freezes so i have open the battery and the phone wont start so i have to take it to carphone warehouse and they say its got a software problem soon, soon i repair my phone from carphone warehouse same thing happends again and again im sick and tired of this phone takin it to carphone warehouse. NOKIA this message is to you guys all your phones are RUBBISH NO more phone from you guys i say iphone 3gs is 100 times better then your crapy n97 i spend £500 for this stupid n97.
Paid good money for a really bad phone. Phone, after latest firmware update reboots on answering an incoming call – interface speed is improved over previous firmware versions, but still lacking.
One previous commenter states that the phone should not be compared to IPhone… but then why are the phone trying to be like IPhone with its screen animations, transitions and finger movement options (like when answering the phone). So no sorry – from a strictly specification point of view it seems like a good phone, but yet again Nokia has made a hash of it ( my 3rd Nokia disappointment). Needless to say the support where I am leaves much to be desired…
Never say never, but this is the last time that I have supporting Nokia…
i have nokia 97 i lost my scurity password to restore my phone, in this i cant find wirless nnetwork.
