Do you remember games like Sonic The Hedgehog? More than 10 years ago games by Sega were really popular and I believe they still are. If you would like to play these games on your S60 handset today is your lucky day. I’ve found an emulator which allows you to play .smd and other files. Smd is a rom file for the sega megadrive. This tutorial works on both, S60 3rd and 5th edition handsets. However, as you need keys to control the game the Nokia N97 is the only S60 5th Edition device which you can use.
First of all, download and install the PicoDrive application. Once you done that you can google or bing for smd or other roms. To set you on your way you can download Sonic here. All you need to do is transfer the rom to your handset in order to play it. Then open PicoDrive, go to configure screen and select portrait full and portrait stretched. After that you need to configure the controls so that you can control the game with the keyboard of your handset. The most important keys are up, down, left, right, a, mode and start. This however may be different depending on the game you’re playing. Once you’ve finished this you can go to ‘Load ROM’ and select your rom. Now you can start playing. By the way, other games like Super Mario or Mortal Combat work with this application too.

How cool is that!

Does the N97 have diagonal direction keys?
One of the issues I have with me E71 is that I have to map some of the QWERTY keyboard keys to direction keys to get around the lack of diagonal direction keys. Not too much of a pain but sometimes you need to think when play picodrive, frodo, vnes games etc. It would be nice to have a phone that can do diagonals
