Some of you may have noticed that I, Christian Titze, haven’t written an article since March this year. This has several reasons. One reason is that I’m very busy with school these days and so I don’t have much time to write reviews, trial gadgets and write news and tutorials here on Symbian World.
Another major reason is Nokia itself.

Now you’ll maybe think “why?” – okay, here’s the answer: In the year 2007, 2 years ago, Nokia has released the N95, a device which had everything you could have believed of. That was so 2007. At the same time Apple has introduced its iPhone, a device which has been changing the whole smartphone-market in a way nobody thought of two years ago. So in the past two years all the phone-manufacturers tried to build a device which is as good as the iPhone, nowadays almost every smartphone has a touchscreen.

nokia 5800 xpressmusic Wheres Christian?

Nokia was one of the last manufacturers who released a modern touchscreen smartphone. They started entering the mass-market with the 5800 XpressMusic. No doubt, this phone was a huge success. It has a low price and great features combined in a modern design.

5c9a56363ced4f79a9206f590dc021dc Wheres Christian?

But what happened to the high-end devices like the N95? Of course this device needed a worthy successor. With the N97 Nokia tried to build such a successor. They combined all the features a multimedia-user wants to have in his or her device. With a full QWERTY-keyboard in a multimedia-device they made a step into the right direction. But except of a touchscreen and a QWERTY-keyboard nothing has changed in comparison with the N95, which was released two years ago. But nowadays the people want a Xenon-flash in their phones, a nice UI and of course great hardware in a well built housing.
Nokia is still facing the same problems with the build-quality of their devices as two years ago and many users of the N97 are telling about problems with the GPS, etc.

apple iphone 3gs Wheres Christian?

Meanwhile at Apple: In June this year they have announced the new iPhone, called iPhone 3G S. Not much has changed compared to the original iPhone 2G. Now it has a crappy 3.2 Megapixel camera with autofocus and VGA video-recording and still no kind of a flash. It doesn’t even have a second camera on the front for video-calls and you can’t send data via bluetooth. The materials which are used for the housing are very cheap and the backside and the chromed side of the front are getting ugly and scratched by just looking at them.
But for some reasons people are buying the iPhone. The keyword here definitely needs to be “simplicity”. All the features are just working. You won’t have a problem with your phone and if you update your phone to the latest firmware it will be the same as before, you won’t have to install the applications again or do something like that. The other reason is the user-interface. Apple has a great UI and you don’t need to search the menu for special settings – you will just find them. Browsing the internet with an iPhone is just great, no other device has such a great and fast internet-browser.

nokia n97 open Wheres Christian?

Nokia doesn’t have this “simplicity” and they’re using an ugly interface on their devices. This is why many people don’t like Nokia any longer. If the N97 would have the simplicity, a new UI and better internet-experience more people would buy it. Nokia, just make your devices more user-friendly and the people will buy them.

4a2dc89c965f4530b663ff350a25f288 Wheres Christian?

I have sold my N95 and bought the new iPhone 3G S. As a real Symbian- and Nokia- freak it was a hard decision and I first thought of buying the N97, but because of the above mentioned reasons I have chosen the iPhone. If Nokia will announce a new device which has a new UI, more “simplicity”, faster web-browsing and great hardware I will make the switch back to Nokia. If they won’t, I will remain with Apple.

I can’t understand what Nokia is doing at the moment…

they have the worst PR ever!

why the hell isn’t there something like a real developer blog (not that retarded blog they have at the moment which is totally useless… all they have is polls like: what do you want the most in your music phone? long battery life??? ORLY???? ), where they could tell us at least once a weeks something like: we are actually developing this and this, look forward to this and this.
they weren’t able to implement the eap-ttls PAP protocoll for years, which would allow thousands of students to use the eduroam wifi networld worldwide at universities. they just didn’t care.

instead they chose to release no information whatsoever…
all you get are shitty youtube videos about how great they are at designing stuff and how they are trying to incorporate the customer’s wishes.

there are hardly no changelogs for the firmware releases.

they even keep information away from us, like the secretly increased cpu clock rate of the 5800… they didn’t tell us before the n97 launch, because they were afraid that even more people wouldn’t fall for the stupidly ovepriced n97, because the n97 and the 5800 have the exact same hardware and they should perform exactly the same. (the hardware qwerty, bigger lcd, more storage and digital compass is hardly worth 300€ extra)
I feel like they are slowing down the 5800′s performance on purpose and if they won’t fix it anytime soon, this is the last nokia phone I have bought.
I’m not expecting it to get a smooth interface as the iphone. That’s impossible.
In the first place it doesn’t have as dumbed down options as the iphone and the low screen resolution of the iphone allows it to bring up all the eyecandy stuff.
The good value-in-price isn’t an excuse for this unacceptable behaviour towards the customers.

  • Merlin-HDH

you are absolutely right … the N97 is a Beta Version. The Price in Germany is falling within one Month from 649.- to 483.- Euro
and they have a bad careline / repaircenter
and they are playing bad games with here employers and customers

    hear hear,
I work at a university, They have bought over 300 iphones for staff, because iphones automatically, detect and configure a certificate protected eap-peap-mschap network, and allow ou connect. They do not even support symbian nokia devices on the network AT ALL.
i had to jump through hoops to manually configure my 5800 (download the certificate manually and install it, then configure) and only by luck i think it still works!
and the interface, gee please some consistency.
ah well hopefully nokia will read and invest a bit more into their interface/phone configurations.

i agree with you m8, even i went over to the dark side until nokia comes up with a better phone…

I recently got a 5800 XM, and in the last 2 months I have gone through 4 of them!
I would have loved to have got an iPhone but in the UK it isn’t the cheapest of phones to get or on the cheapest of tarriffs. you can get it for free on a £45 a month contract, or I think pay about £100 for it on a £30/£35 a moneth contract plus o2 isn’t the best service in the UK. My phone was free with a £25 a month contract, 500 min, unlimited txts and unlimited internet.

My first 5800, kept freezing and the only way to “unfreeze” was to take the battery out and put it back in. the second one had a faulty GPS, the third one worked ok but I was sent a red replacement for a black phone so Virgon replaced it for a black one although that was red still and the GPS didn’t work, soom managed to fix that and I get a GPS fix with in seconds each time.

I think a lot of the problems with my phone orriginated from when Virgin branded the phone with all their settings, after a factory reset I have to remove the proxy server and set the asisted GPS to use the network.

I would class my self as a heavy user of the applications, I use the mail for exchange for syncing up with google for contacts and calendar. I use the Messaging for email, I use the GPS with sports tracker and of course I use the media player, and I have started to use the camera as well.

I used to have an iPod touch and loved the menus, the 5800 menu is no where as nice, it does but that word up in the blog, simplicity pops into my head from time to time. the 5800 is no where near as simple to use as the iPod touch/iphone. my 3 year old daughter could work my touch no problem, she has some problems working the 5800.

overall I am happy with the phone, just waiting for the latest firmware update to become available on my network :)

but Nokia do need to learn that word simplicity.

I think the N97 was a bit of a rushed job, in order to get something to the market. I think the rumoured maemo powered n900 which will become the new Nokia flagship later this year will be where we will really see the future of nokia’s UI plans. There’s also the n97 mini which is rumoured to be coming soon.
Does that mean we should buy the iPhone 3G S?…Only if it works for you and your needs!

  • Alexandr3

One thing you’re missing but it’s also very important is the ability (at least so far) for all the iPhone users to update their os version.

Could you imagine nokia doing it? Why not allow N95 owners the upgrade to 3rd edition FP2 for example? or the N80 too? If a new OS version appears you have to buy a new phone. That makes the iPhone much better in value for money in the long run… am I making myself cleaR?

  • Sanwal

I agree with all. I was succumbed to the fact that iphone beats nokia’s best line-up. I had been a die hard fan of Symbian based Nokia phones. Recenltly I am using E71.

Apple really made a great phone. The ingredients of success i would say are innovation, seamless software, UI, vision, apps, integration with existing platforms and devices.

Alas, Nokia lacks all these departments. I dont know but I always get a feeling that Nokia has always been a follower not a leader in any technology. The get benefit of this existing loyal customers.

But now things are getting a bit worse. If apple rolls out some low level and high level handsets, nokia will be in a big trouble.

Nokia i guess has to act very fast.

    ooops…i bought a 5800 yesterday – and now i find this review!!!

  • Gkocer

well.. i’m regret to get a 5800. iPhone has a better touch performance and simplicity ui. i’m thinkin’ about to get an iPhone and kick the 5800 away.. =\

  • nfan777

N900 turned smartphone uses Maemo os hopefully more user friendly

  • Lucian86

You are absolutely right. I have a 5800 for just over 7 months, and i have had it with this phone.I tride everything, updated it with every ocassion, installed the latest softwares, games and apps…but still is no match for the iphone. At first i was convinced that the iphone was just a good looking phone with limited and restrained number of apps ang games, that only has one simple menu with no multitasking and i was limited to itunes. Now a jailbreak is one click away, and milions of apps and games are very accesible through hundreds of forums.Just look at some games on iphone, they look stunning in compare to my 5800 games, which are the same with the games 2-3 years ago in n95 and other smartphones(assasins creed: iphone:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Nhmj-Gn7_w vs nokia 5800:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHJY_cGNzMU ).In conclusion there is no douth between Iphone and any other phones of the nokia company.

  • Alex

Have to totally agree. Currently using an E71, and compared to the iPhone its slow and archaic. Nokia have truly lost their way and have already become an also ran. They have too many devices that they support too poorly. Different OS versions across all their ranges means that writing apps for them is unappealing.

If Nokia want to survive whats needed it a cull of their handsets and an immediate upgrade for all new handsets to the latest OS (not odd ones here and there). Bring N-gage to all their devices, will encourage game developers and widen its market appeal. If the hardware doesn’t support it make a choice; kill it off or improve the hardware.

Nokia’s approaching the point of no return; either wake up to realise that their historic market appeal means nothing, and actually do something to arrest their declining sales (like concentrate on their core products – mobile phones NOT laptops/netbooks) or they will slip into oblivion.

Nokia are not Apple, nor are they in Apples financial position of strength, they need to go back to basics and build from there.

  • Colak

what do you guys think about the Samsung Omnia HD , just want to hear what you guys think of that compared to Iphone. please reply

  • moonsafariman

Yep, Nokia will look back and regret their mistakes. Just to name a few:

What happened to blue tooth heart rate monitor in their devices? WHY limit to n79?

Whats up with this ‘sat nav’ quality interface?

Whats up with updating all phones with updates at once? Rather than different versions for different countries/carriers?

Whats up with creating a phone combining their best skills so far? Camera, display, sound etc?

Why have different UI for E series in some areas and different for N series? Why not give options to N series users to have other productivity features?

Come on Nokia, just think before releasing a new handset!

  • john

    Hi Mate,

I totally agree with you. I also want to share my experience… At first when the nokia released 5800XM , at that time i was using the Sony ericsson phone. i was so surprise nokia came out a trendy touch screen with high end specs in low price. Then i decided to buy nokia 5800xm to try out. i found that inside this “tube” there are a few features which other phone has, but 5800xm doesnt have( mostly sofetware). e.g: mark several, impressive slide transition, the gallery is not organise at all like the rubbish bin which all the photos and video clips a dumped, kinetic srolling and etc. Honestly as nokia 5800 user, i can say i am quite happy with the hardware , but the software(UI) is totally disappointed. I just can say the UI is totally outdated, not very frenly used, often crashing and not much different compared to any previous version of the OS.

I dont understand why Nokia, decided to lauch new version of symbian OS which is version 5 , but the feature is almost the same as previous , some features even less. why they dont manage to come out a better quality UI since it was established since many years ago? why Apple can bring nice UI as well as HTC (Adroid)? I think this should leave to nokia software developer to think themselves

if talk about N97, it totally a nokia’s failed product. It will be another question why the high end series (N series) of the nokia phones should only have this kind of specs which is not much different from the nk5800??? but the price can raise almost 2 times! N97 seems like only a bit upgrade version of 5800 in hardware e.g larger screen, qwerty keypad, 5.0mp,but the OS is almost the same .

In conclusion, if compare iphone 3GS with N97. i can say nokia N97 wins in hardware but iphone wins in its UI. if i have another choice, i will buy other phone such as Android phone which has nice UI as + nice hardware.

Come on Nokia, convinced us with ur technology!

  • Artix

I personally own a 5800 XM and I don’t think it’s as bad as it looks.

The UI doesn’t seem sucky to me. True, there are lots of bugs, but in general it’s still Symbian, and Symbian is powerful because there are tons of applications available to it (maybe not yet now because the 5th edition is new). And the price factor is important too: 5800 is cheap and yet has a lot of functions that one would expect from a high-end phone; WiFi, even GPS.

As for the iPhone, it lacks multitasking and that’s it for me. To me multiple applications at the same time is very important. I’m not saying that the iPhone sucks just because of that, I just think that it’s one of the major flaws of the iPhone that needs to be fixed.

  • George

Well, as a nokia enthusiast, i got the 5800 in February. What a change it as for me, cause I always had crappy phones with few capabilities.
All was ok. Loved everything including watching series and movies on the way and back from work! A few weeks later problems started. The stupid problem with the vertical lines appeared after unlocking. Google’d this and saw that many people globally had the same problem. At first the lines appeared just after unlocking the phone. As time passed, the problem got worse. I decided to take the phone to Nokia care center (Athens, Greece). This was July the 1st. At the moment I still haven’t got it back!!! Something that I have read in India, and other Asian countries, this took from 2 days till a week, for me is taking almost TWO MONTHS.
The worst about all this, no one from nokia knew where my phone was and the progress of the repair. The center of Nokia representative here in Greece, Alpha Copy, answered after a three 20-25 minute hold ( a pre-recorded message said that someone would be with me rapidly!!!) and said that my phone went abroad for repair. A few days later (10-12) i called once more. Said that my phone has returned from abroad, but is now at the my local nokia care center and it is closed for summer holidays and that I have to wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, no wonder everyone globally is not happy with nokia.

  • P-M

    @ Colak

I bought the Omnia HD (16 gb) in june and so far I am very happy with it. It has a very responsive screen and the Symbian OS, which is new to me, is flexible and easy to tailor to my personal taste. I would highly recommend it if it wasn’t for one thing: Samsung’s absolutely deplorable support.
My only hope is that they will improve their support systems in the wake of their growth in market share and the number of new phones they are churning out. If it asn’t for the various symbian sites out there, I would never have bought it.

That said, it is a superb phone with everything on it that I need, and I do think it is better than the iPhone (which, don’t get me wrong, is also an excellent phone) as it offers more versatility and flexibility.

  • http://www.symbianworld.org Christian Titze

Wow, I haven’t thought that so many of you would agree with me.

It’s nice to read all your comments and to see how you think about Nokia.

One thing I haven’t mentioned in my article above: This article is my personal opinion about Nokia at the moment. Of course I don’t want to tell you to buy an iPhone. As written in the article the Nokia 5800 XM was a huge success and no doubt it is a nice device with a good cost/performance-ratio.
But when I first used a 5800 XM I really hated the UI. In some menu’s you will need to double-tap, then sometimes you need to tap just once and scrolling through the menu’s is very hard. The virtual keys are very small and they rather seem to be designed for the stylus than for the human fingers.
To say it in one word: It’s not intuitive.

The iPhone isn’t perfect at all, if you think I want to tell this to you. It has a crappy camera without any kind of flash, it doesn’t have a removable battery, no memorycard-slot, you can’t send data via Bluetooth and Apple really wants to have all the control over their users (just google for “apple communism”).
However, it has the above mentioned “simplicity”…

  • Merlin-HDH

    @Christian
I think everyone knows what you like to say … but also much Company’s are thinking more about the Stockholder, but not about the customers and even more the employees. After N90 and N93 I was annoyed about Nokia and his Services, repairtimes up to 8 weeks and stupid conversations was still enough for me. Than it was my last try I bought the first N95 and I was happy with it again, like my 7650 and 6600. This was my decision to buy a N97 and I am very sad and I feel duped. If you read this, please keep in mind, I never used sponsored Devices, I pay good money for it and the N97 IS crap. Actual there is the 2nd new Firmware, but my Device always said No … even if Nokia will be better in Future …. never ever …
    regards to all

  • Pete

I bought a 5800 earlier this year, and and iPhone about a month ago. I have to say that whilst I use the iPhone more, each device has it’s advantages/disadvantages. The user experience on the IPhone is vastly superior, as is the range of apps. The crippled bluetooth, no multitasking and being told what apps I can install go against it.
If Nokia got a grip of Symbian, and made them bring out an OS that competes with the iPhone, and sorted out the joke that is the Ovi Store, Nokia would be onto a winner.
By the way, what use is the compass? When I am moving, the phone knows which direction I going in because of GPS. Are they going to fit a dial next? (Yes, I have the App on my 5800.)

  • Kenzy

For 13 years I only bought Nokia, I had many and different devices from Nokia, my last ones the 5800 and the N97, but I agree with all the people over me.

I bought the 5800, cause it was cheap, new and interesting, but it looks like an brick and the UI was old-fashioned. I decided not to buy Nokia again, but then they released the N97, and Nokia fan I am, I bought it.

It’s the same old UI like on 5800 (I knew it), but the hardware is not worth the money (€ 600 and they gave me a device where the vibration and the other things are broken, I brought it to Nokia Service and got it back with the same two failures after weeks of waiting!) and the lens are being scrached (what purpose makes an 5 mpixel Cam which can’t be used?)…that’s the hardware!

The software is full of bugs and they only make Updates for one part of the world (I’m from the EU and have not got the Update yet) but in this update they don’t fixed everything anyway, so we have to wait month with an beta-version, although we paid for a phone, which should be perfekt for this highleveled price. About Ovi store, I don’t want to say a thing, the graphic of the site is worsest, the prices highest, the apps “badest” and the offer so small for THE flagship (where are the 50.000 apps, with 800 apps for free?). The iPhone show it how it works!

Nokia, after 13 years of faithfulness, it is my last device and years ago I also bought stocks on the stock exchange from Nokia. But I’m done. And when you give up symbian and support maemo now, it would be faster then you think, cause it doesn’t really crap me to have an half backed phone without support and with bad hardware in future.

    Kenzy from Austria

  • Merlin-HDH

    @Pete
you can’t compare this three devices the 5800 XM is for less than 220€, the N97 is around 480€ and the Iphone 3GS 32 is more than 900€ without contract. You can’t hit against Nokia because they don’t sell a cheap Iphone … but they have to sell a good working handset for good money … and not prerelease crap … imo
    Regards

    Sir,
My problem is in these bad recessionary times every penny counts. I had gone much out of my budget to buy this phone.
How can I let go my hard earned money…

Nokia does not give a xxxx for INDIAN MOBILE USERS inspite of enjoying no. one position in huge Indian market.

I AM SURE INDIAN CONSUMER DO NOT LET ANYONE XXXX THEMSELVES SO EASILY. Many companies with good product but PATHETIC SERVICES have been KICKED OUT OF INDIA.

For examples- 1)General Motors- Earlier had bad services- Now they give 3-years services all paid( even oil change etc)
2)Videocon- Earlier they had bad services- Now their sale is growing very fast- Mr. KR KIM From LG has joined them- who is very- very keen on customer service- does not like any lexities…
    3)Akai/ Aiwa/ Fiat–…. the examples are so many…

I hope that some RESPONSIBLE PERSON FROM NOKIA sees these negative blogs and wakes up.

HAVE THESE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK WITH ANY INDIAN COMPANY- THEY WILL RUN TO WOO THE DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER WITH ANYTHING…

    regards,
