Nokia N97 2.0 Firmware: Video and Information
Posted by Norman John & Ibrahim Jogee in N-Series, N97, N97 2.0, Nokia, Nokia World 09
During Nokia World 2009 Nokia announced that they are soon going to splash out a new 2.0 Firmware update for the Nokia N97. This update is definitely worth the mention as it is bringing a host of new features, many improvements and several bug fixes, that will change the way you use your device.The update is due to roll out either mid/end of October and will initially be available via NSU (Nokia Software Update). The new firmware will then later appear over the air via FOTA (Firmware Over The Air).

Usability Improvement
- Kinetic Scrolling: Allowing kinetic scrolling in the menu, contacts, and other applications with long lists
- More Space: The new memory allocation brings around 20-30MB more space for applications and themes
- Visually enhanced Music Player and Photo Menu
- Improved accessibility to Symbols and Numbers: Holding a key for 1 seconds will activate the alternative character, no need to press the blue key first
New Experiences
- New Homescreen Widgets: CNN, MySpace, ESPN, Elle and more have now been added
- Newer Version of Ovi Maps: More features and a new service menu
- Voice UI Improvements: Support for Voice over IP
These are just some of the highlights of the new 2.0 Firmware for the Nokia N97. Many more changes and improvements are still yet to come, such as new transition effects and increased stability. This is also the first firmware update Nokia have ever announced with such hype, and critics may argue that this is nothing but a simple update, however I believe the update will completely change the feel and usability of the device, giving the N97 a new birth. As pictures say more than 1000 words this video will show you everything you need to know:

Hmm… Kindofthee?
what’s that?
not a second to early. My n97 crashes 2 times a week. Mostly hillarious is the power management and loading behaviour. If deadening out of power you could only recharge it with the 230V power supply. All others doesn.t work fo me…..

I’m sure a lot of people will shout “too little too late” but I can’t wait for this. And the ability to breath new life into an already decent handset is going to be great for N97 users. Hopefully Vodafone and the other network operators will be quick with their updates.
@Simon
Great point there!

5800, anyone?
@ninjafox, I second that.. Trully.. I own a N97 and my gf a 5800, both with the same issues..
@Nokia, please, update/fix the 5800 too!!
the icons in application are more large
It looks like Nokia are copying Apple’s hype-laden firmware updates. It would be better if the OTA update was offered first, but I guess their ‘carrier approval’ agreement prevents it.
The N97 has been a disappointment to some, but anyone who bothered to learn about the handset before purchase shouldn’t be to surprised at the performance and stability issues. I knew, as a previous N95 early-adpoter, that at least 2 firmware updates would be needed to iron out the bugs. I also knew that it was no iPhone killer. No 3D acceleration and no multi-touch made this very obvious.
I’m about 2 months in to my contract with Voda UK. Next upgrade will be to the N900 (or its successor).
Awful english…I’m ashamed to be a finn…
What comes to the upgrade – contains features that device of this price tag should have had in the first version already.
Classic Finnish! He sounds like a redneck rally driver from Jyväskylä…
@hasan
thank you, it tool more than an hour
Was that Finnish? My God…. Then again, maybe I’ve been in Helsinki too long.

Ok…so is this a N97 Mini (we note no Dpad). Is the soiftware then the same?
I’m disappointed that version 2 still doesn’t give me dialer keypads with letters. Does Nokia not know that the US of A still enjoys publishing numbers with correlated alphabets?!? How hard is it to use the same button images that are already in use when in text editing mode, where the dialpad has letters? Can anyone relay this request to Nokia? I’ve already complained to the technicians at the Chicago flagship store, and I’m disappointed that 2.0 still doesn’t have this. =(

piece of sh*t will eventually stink again even if you pour perfume (ver 2.0) on it.
My advice to Nokia…. if you want a good future fire the entire N97 designing team because you can fins much better folks in these recessionary times who could have done a much better job and N97 would have been on the top.
Guys did anyone noticed that the black nokia phone which the guy use in the video isnt the n97 or the n97 mini. The display is much wider and the keys arent on the position where they should be.
Holy cow, you’re right! what’s up with that? Dammit! Nokia does it again. Luckily another video on n97fanatics.com shows what appears to be a legit N97 with the new firmware.
i am here in ksa and ver 2.0 is not yet available in OTA, where can i download arabic firmware.
thanks
nokia ? I think are bunch of losers and liars… Drs no greatness about n97 phones. It is jst a waste of money and time. Its lyk an expensive piece of a brick. There is no update yet available really in NSU, i am trying to find it, bt drs no update 2.0. I hope nokia will eventually die out. Burn to hell. The greatest trickster of all time. You trick unsuspecting customers.
OK lah kalo begitu
