  2. err…. most of those improvements don’t seem to actually be in there.

i know, i know, they were advertised before the firmware release, so you probably had this post ready and waiting, but you should edit it now.

    Kinetic Scrolling: YES
More Space: NOT THAT I CAN SEE
Visually enhanced Music Player and Photo Men: YES
Improved accessibility to Symbols and Numbers: YES

New Homescreen Widgets: NO NEW WIDGETS
Newer Version of Ovi Maps: YES, BUTNOT THE LATEST THIS ONE HAS NO SPECIAL SERVICES MENU
Voice UI Improvements: Support for Voice over IP: NOT THAT I CAN SEE

so, some new stuff for sure.
specifically, looking under [Settings -> Connectivity -> Admin. Settings] I see a bunch of new, otherwise undocumented stuff.

This used to be a short list (which included SIP settings) and now contains:
Net Settings (new: i think this will be settings for integrated Ovi Services, maybe Ovi SDK Apps)
Packet Data (always was there, it’s the tethering settings)
    Presence (new: purpose is obvious)
SIP Settings: (always was there, not sure what use it is without a SIP client however)
XDM Profile: (new: quick googling came up with document exchange, might have to do with Ovi Files?)
APN Control: (always was there, gives access to SIM specific APN access restriction management)

so – new stuff looks like back-end enablers for potentially better Ovi Integration, which makes sense since the N97 is supposed to be all Ovi Integrated and all.

I just did the update and what I find is that applications like Ovi Chat and Vlingo are added and cannot be removed even if I don’t want them. Vlingo is not a free version either, yet there is no way to remove it. I also cannot find Nokia Messaging anywhere on the phone. I did not have it before and even looking in the Installed Applications listings I don’t find it. No new widgets either.

    What did i find?

    1. I lost C: drive space and I see no benefits added there.
    2. The amount of RAM has not changed.
    3. Ovi Maps is the same, including a longer than desired GPS link time.
    4. Kinetic scrolling is not throughout the phone but there is more of it (doesn’t work in X-plore).
    5. Photos works a lot like the beta Photo Browser so I can now remove that to save some disk space.
    6. Touch response seems to be less-responsive as opposed to the advertised more responsive. It may be because the menus now have kinetic scrolling and any time you try and select a folder it tries to scroll through the list of folders (may be my fat thumbs)

Time will tell if this update has really done anything. If my initial impressions don’t become changed in the next few days then I will wait for the N900 to go through it’s initial issues and a few upgrades and then I will replace the N97.

I did notice an increase in my memory. From 20 to 54,… MB. But AFTER a format. When I left things as they were (as in no format and no reset what so ever) I had a 20-25 MB left in memory. After format and reinstall of the applications I used to have before I formatted my N97, I have a 50-55 MB of memory. And I will say the phone is faster!
