Symbian Countdown Mysterious Symbian Countdown refers to a major Announcement

Recently the official Symbian site launched a new webpage; countown.symbian.org, which, you guessed it, is some sort of cryptic countdown. It usded to be titeld 108 and changed to 49 now. What these numbers mean, well no one is quite sure. There is also a message in the source code of the web page reading “if you’re looking for a secret, here’s one: 108.” What do you think it could be? We’d love to hear your thoughts, so drop a comment below or join in the conversation on twitter with hash tag #symbiancountdown.

As far as we can tell this countdown refers to a major announcement

This refers to a major announcement coming soon, so please keep your eyes peeled.

We will keep you updated!

Where did you get the notice “This refers to a major announcement coming soon, so please keep your eyes peeled” from?

If u take look at source code of countdown page, u will see hidden comment:
“Watch this space, my friends. Watch. This. Space.”

    Just hit 36!! Anymore ideas???

  • http://sonus-online.net JonusC

Now that it’s at 36, the in-line comment changed to “Lots of good ideas, keep ‘em coming.” My guess is that it is some development process, possibly the number of issues/bugs remaining in Symbian^2 – or maybe if we’re really lucky how much code blocks (pages? etc.) are left for open-sourcing of the entire Symbian^1 platform.

Or it’s something that’s totally gonna smack us in the face. In a good way. I’ll be watching these comments here and crawl the web every day before 0, the anticipation is killing me…

P.S. Investigating the source, I can’t get any reaction out of http://countdown.symbian.org/world.php?r=0&url=countdown.symbian.org apart from the random images. Infact the URL parameters are not needed for the random image so they must be incorrect.

P.P.S. The numbers so far, trying to build mnemonic word(s) based on a standard Touch Tone keypad, I came up with “UNIX ITEM” (accidently tweeted “UNIX TIME” whoops!) which seems awfully convenient however the 0′s and 1′s don’t make a letter and they don’t match a space or any punctuation…
