How to: Change Fonts in S60 3rd
You want to customize your S60 device? Yes? Okay, let´s customize! Today I´ll show you how to change the fonts of your gadget.

Let´s start…
Works on all S60 3rd devices except those with built-in memory like N95 8GB or N81 8GB!
1. You need: A Nokia S60 3rd device, something to write, a cardreader or USB-cable and of course your computer.
2. At first download a explorer like Y-Browser or similar and install it on your device.
3. Then start your explorer and go to Z:/resource/Fonts

4. Now you need something to write. Write down exactly the names of all the fonts in this folder (nohindisnr60, S60ZDIGI, …)

5. Choose the font that you want on your device. It should be a *.ttf file. You can download fonts e.g. here. You can also take a file from your computer, if you use windows they´re all in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts
6. Make a new folder called “Fonts”, and copy the font you´ve chosen in this folder. Paste it as many times as you need it and rename it exactly like the names you´ve written down before (nohindisnr60, …)
7. Take out your memorycard or connect your device to the computer and choose data transfer.
8. Go to your memory card (E:\) and create a new folder called resource if it isn´t there yet.
9. Now copy the folder “Fonts” you´ve made before and paste it into the resource folder on your memory card.
10. Switch off your phone and put in your memorycard. Now turn on your phone again.
11. Congratulations, you changed the font on your device!
To reset the font, just turn off your phone, take out the memorycard and delete the folder “Fonts” on it. Put it in again and restart the phone.
!!!VERY IMPORTANT: Do NOT change the fonts on your phonememory (C:\), only on your memorycard (E:\)!!!

Be aware that doing this will disable the phone’s ability to connect via USB as a mass storage device.
symbianguru said this on January 19th, 2008 at 16:54
so thats a no no no for n95 8gb and n81 8gb and any other devices with inbuilt memory because we have no memory cards to remove.

Thanks for the information, dani2xll! I haven´t thought of that, I will add this information to my tutorial.

The only way to connect your phone as a mass storage device after changing the font is to restart it without memory card. This doesn’t always work though but it worked for me a few times when I really needed the mass storage function.

Nice Tutorial, just a shame about the Mass Storage bug. I use it a lot, so this is a no go for me until it gets sorted out.

Hey without reading the mass storage Bug, I did this for my N95 8GB…Is there a way to get rid of this now….am not able to connect as mass storage :((

Nice tutorial… But, anybody have a good set of fonts to use with my Nokia? (E61 currently :))
Emre SUMENGEN said this on February 2nd, 2008 at 22:09
Thanks a lot for the tutorial. I am now *finally* able to view Japanese characters on my Nokia6120c
On my phone though, there’s a bug that makes the phone crash and restart by itself when I go to Settings -> Language. Maybe it’s because of the nature of the font I used? I don’t need to change the language anyway, so this bug is a minor inconvenience to me.

You van change back and allow data transfer mode
1. turnoff phone
2.take mmc out
3.whait until phone boot again and than put your mmc inside
4.allow data transfer mode and rename folder or just tranfer what you meant to

Well, it might not work this way on 6120. I did all the steps mentioned but the fonts did not change. Maybe only some fonts work.

So, it is true, not all fonts will be accepted to be used. On nokia 6120 I tried more than one and some are shown some not. And on this phone model is enough to copy the fonts to the card (resource/fonts) and not change the names and it installed them. I used them with mobireader and works ok even if they are romanian caracters. Well, you need to find the FONTS which work and which not, but with 6120 from 15 fonts 10 worked after copying them on the phone card with their original names.
I’m so glad, and thank to all who contributed this page.

mike said this on March 4th, 2008 at 02:48
It definately does work on the N95.
Seanybiker said this on March 8th, 2008 at 16:17
@mike: Maybe you made a typing mistake in the files.
@jay: The N91 has a built-in memory. You have to reset your phone by tiping in: *#7370#
–> Important: All data on the phone will be deleted!

I have Nokia N95. And I did what you said. And it worked
Rahman said this on March 16th, 2008 at 17:08
To all those who don´t understand step 4:
You have different files in the folder fonts. Now you show them on your display and write them down to a piece of paper. Later you rename the new font to these names.
Christian Titze said this on March 18th, 2008 at 17:16
hi can u help me with my N93. i’ve tried to create a folder name resource on my mmc, but it kept saying file name already exists.
mac said this on March 20th, 2008 at 04:20
hi mac,
I think that on your mmc there already is the folder resource. You have to activate that you want to see all folders (the hidden ones too) in the explorer of your computer. Because normally it´s a hidden folder.
Christian Titze said this on March 20th, 2008 at 07:57
I tried this with a few different fonts. I never touched the z drive, only copied the names. I have removed the fonts from my memory card, but one of the previous fonts I used is still used and is the only font left in the z drive. Would there be any way to fix this or does anyone have the original fonts for the N75?
Brian said this on March 20th, 2008 at 21:25
So, does this mean, on E90, I can use only 4 fonts at a time?
Broken Arrow said this on March 26th, 2008 at 00:45
You don’t need to rename the font file names, and also you can put as many fonts you need, not only 4. At least this worked on my E90, now I can read Bengali characters.
Broken Arrow said this on March 26th, 2008 at 01:10
@ Brian:
Have you turned your phone off and on again? This should fix the problem. If it won´t fix the problem leave a comment.
Christian Titze said this on March 26th, 2008 at 10:09
That didn’t work. I left it that changed for a few weeks and recently wanted to switch back, then realized it wouldn’t be so easy. Somehow the files on my memory card replaced those on the phone.

I tried the same way and it works well.
Just 1 more time:
1. Use F-Explorer or Y-Explorer, go to Z:\Resource\Fonts, see what are the fonts you have (different region got different fonts). in Asian Pacific: it is:
S60SC.ccc
S60TCHK.ccc
S60ZDIGI.ttf
2. So just create a folder, copy any TRUE TYPE FONT from your C:\Windows\Fonts to that folder (remember: TTF) . I recommend Tahoma, Arial or Verdana.
3. Make 2 copies of that fonts, then rename all 3 files to what you see in Z:\Resource\Fonts
4. Connect your mobile to PC using USB-data mode.
5. Copy the fonts you changed to E:\Resource\Fonts (E: is your memory card). If the folder not exist, just create it.
Reboot and enjoy.
PS: You can use Font Magnifier to adjust the size ^^ ! I’m now reading Vietnamese on my N95 comfortably

Do u know how to rename a theme? I just soo tired to find themes that the name just like Winter Moon, Pinky, Days To Come, etc. But all I found is like these, WinterMoon_by_babi, pinky, Days_To_Come and so on.
If I aksed the creator of the theme to rename it just as I wanted, they don’t want it coz they afraid I want to sell it, it’s rubish, it’s only to my personal N80, N73 & E70
desperarte for themes said this on May 19th, 2008 at 02:15
As far as I know you can’t rename themes, maybe with Carbide.UI, but I don’t know because I don’t work with themes - I only use them
