You want to customize your S60 device? Yes? Okay, let´s customize! Today I´ll show you how to change the fonts of your gadget.

2203370973 1a9903cdfb o How to: Change Fonts in S60 3rd 2203371937 6d3d31ca0e o How to: Change Fonts in S60 3rd

Let´s start…

Works on all S60 3rd devices except those with built-in memory like N95 8GB or N81 8GB!

1. You need: A Nokia S60 3rd device, something to write, a cardreader or USB-cable and of course your computer.

2. At first download a explorer like Y-Browser or similar and install it on your device.

3. Then start your explorer and go to Z:/resource/Fonts

2203371519 48943694c3 o How to: Change Fonts in S60 3rd

4. Now you need something to write. Write down exactly the names of all the fonts in this folder (nohindisnr60, S60ZDIGI, …)

2204163342 f84d631788 o How to: Change Fonts in S60 3rd

5. Choose the font that you want on your device. It should be a *.ttf file. You can download fonts e.g. here. You can also take a file from your computer, if you use windows they´re all in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts

6. Make a new folder called “Fonts”, and copy the font you´ve chosen in this folder. Paste it as many times as you need it and rename it exactly like the names you´ve written down before (nohindisnr60, …)

7. Take out your memorycard or connect your device to the computer and choose data transfer.

8. Go to your memory card (E:\) and create a new folder called resource if it isn´t there yet.

9. Now copy the folder “Fonts” you´ve made before and paste it into the resource folder on your memory card.

10. Switch off your phone and put in your memorycard. Now turn on your phone again.

11. Congratulations, you changed the font on your device!

To reset the font, just turn off your phone, take out the memorycard and delete the folder “Fonts” on it. Put it in again and restart the phone.

!!!VERY IMPORTANT: Do NOT change the fonts on your phonememory (C:\), only on your memorycard (E:\)!!!

Be aware that doing this will disable the phone’s ability to connect via USB as a mass storage device.

  • http://www.dani2xll.com dani2xll

so thats a no no no for n95 8gb and n81 8gb and any other devices with inbuilt memory because we have no memory cards to remove.

Thanks for the information, dani2xll! I haven´t thought of that, I will add this information to my tutorial.

  • bedobela

The only way to connect your phone as a mass storage device after changing the font is to restart it without memory card. This doesn’t always work though but it worked for me a few times when I really needed the mass storage function.

Nice Tutorial, just a shame about the Mass Storage bug. I use it a lot, so this is a no go for me until it gets sorted out.

  • Ranjith

Hey without reading the mass storage Bug, I did this for my N95 8GB…Is there a way to get rid of this now….am not able to connect as mass storage :( (

  • Emre SUMENGEN

Nice tutorial… But, anybody have a good set of fonts to use with my Nokia? (E61 currently :) )

  • youtin

Thanks a lot for the tutorial. I am now *finally* able to view Japanese characters on my Nokia6120c :) On my phone though, there’s a bug that makes the phone crash and restart by itself when I go to Settings -> Language. Maybe it’s because of the nature of the font I used? I don’t need to change the language anyway, so this bug is a minor inconvenience to me.

  • Igor

You van change back and allow data transfer mode
    1. turnoff phone
    2.take mmc out
3.whait until phone boot again and than put your mmc inside
4.allow data transfer mode and rename folder or just tranfer what you meant to

Well, it might not work this way on 6120. I did all the steps mentioned but the fonts did not change. Maybe only some fonts work.

  • Anonymous

So, it is true, not all fonts will be accepted to be used. On nokia 6120 I tried more than one and some are shown some not. And on this phone model is enough to copy the fonts to the card (resource/fonts) and not change the names and it installed them. I used them with mobireader and works ok even if they are romanian caracters. Well, you need to find the FONTS which work and which not, but with 6120 from 15 fonts 10 worked after copying them on the phone card with their original names.
I’m so glad, and thank to all who contributed this page.

@mike: Maybe you made a typing mistake in the files.

@jay: The N91 has a built-in memory. You have to reset your phone by tiping in: *#7370#
–> Important: All data on the phone will be deleted!

Tryed it on my N95 and it doesnt work there was not a folder called fonts in resources to start with like in youre instruction any ideas.

I have Nokia N95. And I did what you said. And it worked

  • http://www.symbianworld.de Christian Titze

To all those who don´t understand step 4:

You have different files in the folder fonts. Now you show them on your display and write them down to a piece of paper. Later you rename the new font to these names.

  • mac

hi can u help me with my N93. i’ve tried to create a folder name resource on my mmc, but it kept saying file name already exists.

  • http://www.symbianworld.de Christian Titze

    hi mac,

I think that on your mmc there already is the folder resource. You have to activate that you want to see all folders (the hidden ones too) in the explorer of your computer. Because normally it´s a hidden folder.

  • Brian

I tried this with a few different fonts. I never touched the z drive, only copied the names. I have removed the fonts from my memory card, but one of the previous fonts I used is still used and is the only font left in the z drive. Would there be any way to fix this or does anyone have the original fonts for the N75?

  • Broken Arrow

So, does this mean, on E90, I can use only 4 fonts at a time?

  • Broken Arrow

You don’t need to rename the font file names, and also you can put as many fonts you need, not only 4. At least this worked on my E90, now I can read Bengali characters.

  • http://www.symbianworld.de Christian Titze

    @ Brian:

Have you turned your phone off and on again? This should fix the problem. If it won´t fix the problem leave a comment.

  • Brian

That didn’t work. I left it that changed for a few weeks and recently wanted to switch back, then realized it wouldn’t be so easy. Somehow the files on my memory card replaced those on the phone.

  • http://gaubeo.com Dio

I tried the same way and it works well.

    Just 1 more time:

    1. Use F-Explorer or Y-Explorer, go to Z:\Resource\Fonts, see what are the fonts you have (different region got different fonts). in Asian Pacific: it is:
    S60SC.ccc
    S60TCHK.ccc
    S60ZDIGI.ttf

    2. So just create a folder, copy any TRUE TYPE FONT from your C:\Windows\Fonts to that folder (remember: TTF) . I recommend Tahoma, Arial or Verdana.

    3. Make 2 copies of that fonts, then rename all 3 files to what you see in Z:\Resource\Fonts

    4. Connect your mobile to PC using USB-data mode.

    5. Copy the fonts you changed to E:\Resource\Fonts (E: is your memory card). If the folder not exist, just create it.

    Reboot and enjoy.
PS: You can use Font Magnifier to adjust the size ^^ ! I’m now reading Vietnamese on my N95 comfortably

  • desperarte for themes

Do u know how to rename a theme? I just soo tired to find themes that the name just like Winter Moon, Pinky, Days To Come, etc. But all I found is like these, WinterMoon_by_babi, pinky, Days_To_Come and so on.
If I aksed the creator of the theme to rename it just as I wanted, they don’t want it coz they afraid I want to sell it, it’s rubish, it’s only to my personal N80, N73 & E70

  • http://www.symbianworld.de Christian Titze

As far as I know you can’t rename themes, maybe with Carbide.UI, but I don’t know because I don’t work with themes – I only use them ;)

    Dear Christian,
Same way can be used for S60 v5 devices such as Nokia 5800 xm, i done it my self with a success.
    My question is:
Can i have 2 different languages fonts to be in the same time? since in my first trail i tried a font which read English but shown boxes with the Arabic language. Now iam using Tahoma font which can read both English and arabic but iam looking for a bigger font to read both languages, or to use a big font for english and another font for Arabic, can it be done?
you said: (6. Make a new folder called “Fonts”, and copy the font you´ve chosen in this folder. Paste it as many times as you need it and rename it exactly like the names you´ve written down before (nohindisnr60, …) – can you give more details about this step.

  • http://www.symbianworld.org Christian Titze

    Hi thermax04,

Thanks for the information about S60 5th devices.

I don’t know which fonts can be read in different languages, but if I were you I would try all the “standard-fonts” like Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, etc.

About the 6th step: You need to copy the font you want to use as many times as there are the different names. E.g. if there are 5 different names of the fonts you need to copy your font 5 times and rename it with all the different file-names.

  • jonathan_ckf

help me please!!…its doesnt work..I’m using nokia 5800…Is it i have to create a new folder and renamed it Fonts, then paste 3 fonts i choose in my computer and rename all of them as what i written just now? For those who are having problems with S60SC.ccc and S60TCHK.ccc:
All you need to do is to change the file format on the font that you are going to use.
    Here’s how:
    1. Once you have chosen your font and renamed it to the following format:
    S60SC
    S60TCHK
    S60ZDIGI
    • the default format of the first 2 fonts would be:
    S60SC.ttf
    S60TCHK.ttf
and that’s the reason why it is not working.

    2. Identify the file format:
    • Open the “Fonts” folder that you created
    • Go to Tools Menu > Folder Options> View
    • Remove the check on “Hide extensions for known file types”
    • Then you’ll be able to see the extension file types of the font, which was mentioned above.

    3. Change the file extension:
    • Right click the font named as S60SC.ttf and S60TCHK.ttf
    • Remove “.ttf” and change it to “.ccc”
    • There would be a warning message, just ignore it and click OK.
    • Now, you’ve successfully change the file format of the 2 fonts to .ccc and you can now resume to the steps on how to change font on your phone.

    - Hope this will help you guys out!

when you install any software to internal hard disk like n91′s hard disk , then we will not be able to access the hard disk as mass storage.Solution:
    1.Switch off your phone
    2. remove the back cover of battery (just the cover, not the battery)
    3. re/start the phone. Since the phone’s battery cover is removed the phones hard disk will not be detected.
4.once the phone is completely started, put the battery cover back again.
    5. go to the application manager, and try to uninstall the font.
    hope this helps

Christian, i wonder if u can help me? coz im totally baffled…

iv followed ur guide to the T and all was well, but when it came to creating a new folder in my memory cards E:\ drive it wont let me rename it ‘resource’ and i think thats why it wont work for me but im not sure. i went ahead n copied my new ‘fonts’ folder into ‘new folder’ anyways but still didnt work?

any idea why it wont let me rename it ‘resource’? any tips / advice / guidance would be excellent.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Thanks for such a nice guide.
My device is NOKIA E71. running Symbian series 60 Version 3. I tried every step strictly as per your advice. The fonts got changed in the phone, but sorry to say that some places fonts are not rendered properly; square box-box things are coming. I wanted to read/write unicode bengali/hindi (devnagari script) on my device, but I think unicode is not supported in this device. Even bengali fonts are not displayed in web browser/Facebook etc.
I tried FontRouter Lite, but getting Certificate error. Browsed many pages for certificate, even submitted to Symbian-signed website but with no result.
Any one, any idea, after where I stopped?

I did everything step-by-step. However, after I turn the phone off/insert the memory and TRY to turn the phone back on, the phone just pops up with a white screen and then shuts back off. It does this a few times and then stops completely. The phone works fine after I remove the memory card and turn the phone on. What could be the problem? I’ve even re-formatted the card, but I get the same result.
