nokia n8 smartphone Reasons why you should NOT wait for the Nokia N8In a previous post Jade talked about the reasons why one should wait for the Nokia N8 instead of getting one of the current hot toys like the iPhone 4 or the HTC Desire. Of course I personally would also wait for the Nokia N8 but, yes there is a but, there are also reasons why one should definitely not wait:

  • Because Symbian^3 is less an revolution as an evolution – even Nokia said so. Symbian, however, needs exactly this – an revolution – in order to survive on the market .

When it comes to the usability and beauty of the UI, S60 5th Edition and now Symbian^3 are far far behind. Icons still look like in 2005 and the fonts too. Maybe Symbian^4 is the big Messiahs Nokia and Symbian have been waiting for but Symbian^3 cannot compete with iOS 4 and Android in terms in breakthrough for UI, maybe because Symbian^3 is a complete overhaul for Symbian^1 problems.
  • Because other smartphones do also record 720p videos and offer even more around this feature. The recently announced iPhone 4 does also 720p videos but with 30fps instead of the N8′s 25. Sony Ericsson’s Vivaz Pro can also record HD videos, does continuous focus and is already available in the stores. So, this feature is not as groundbreaking as it first sounds
  • Because Nokia World is coming soon and Nokia will, without a doubt, announce a few more smartphones. Of course it remains to be seen what exactly Anssi Vanjoki will show off. One of which can be the E7 that rumours already a while in the internet. Hence, if you want a Nokia, you should wait for the Nokia World and new devices instead of for the Nokia N8.
  • n8 divx no 2 300x178 Reasons why you should NOT wait for the Nokia N8Because the N8 misses many basic features. For example DivX videos are not supported and a multitouch keyboard
    does not exists.
  • Because there are almost no killer apps and games. While developers are eager to write and contribute high quality apps for Apples’s App store, the Ovi Store mainly consists out of poor applications and games. All mayor titles like Splinter Cell, Spider Man or Iron Man 2 are only announced for the iPhone, not however for Symbian. If you love apps and games, than you should not wait for the N8 and Symbian

iphone460b 1652526c Reasons why you should NOT wait for the Nokia N8

  • Because the hardware is not cutting edge. It begins with the nHD screen (360 x 640 pixels) and ends with the 680Mhz processor. Almost all other vendors have already at least one devices with a strong 1Ghz processor and a crystal sharp display. The best example is again the iPhone 4 with its stunning 640 x 960 pixels display which is based on IPS technology.

Concluding I want to say, that some of these points may be a little bit exaggerated, but it shows the tension between Nokia fans and Nokia haters. Also does it highlight the problem Nokia and Symbian are facing these days. Now we want to hear your take! Are you waiting for the Nokia N8 or do you think that the N8 is not worth the money.

    My thoughts:

-720p at 25fps is HD video. and the human retina (the eye, duh!) can only see 24 fps… so 25, 26, 29 or 30 will look the same for the human eye.

-Again, the screen resolution isnt important. The human eye only differs 240dpi. anything more than that will be the same. Thats another marketing gimmick like the 16 millions of colors when the human eye can only see like 65k… others are only gradients.

-Hope you guys can see a thing in direct sunlight in the upcoming iphone 4g screen…

  • http://www.symbianworld.org Norman John

Frankie, have you had the n97 and the n900? you can really see the difference between these both resolutions.

And with the 30fps, this just shows that the n8 isn’t cutting edge

  • Irha

@Frankie, you must read this article, you would change your mind on fps: http://amo.net/NT/02-21-01FPS.html

  • iq

    what a load of crap..

1.the symbian may not be beatiful as iphone’s OS but it has more features and it is more functional that iOS.

2.as the guy above mentioned, 24fps is what the human eyes see.. so it doesnt matter if it 24,25 or 30..it will always be the same..

3.e7 is a business phone while n8 is a multimedia phone

4.hahaha,this is funny, many basic features?divx? it support divx and it can even play .mkv files which that crappy iphone cant even do.. u dont have to waste ur time by converting a video to be put in ur phone.haha..and ur beloved iphone is the one that is mssing very basic features such as file manager, bluetooth file transfer and cant even be used as mass storage..lame..

5.hardware is not cutting edge huh? it has hdmi output, usb on the go which the iphone dont even have..dont even bring the IPS into the topic..everyone knows that its just a fancy name for normal lcd and its just a marketing ploy…

please dont write crap like this..

  • Jack

The only reason not to buy Nokia N8 is that I can’t decide which color to choose. It is much easier to buy a black iPhone :-)

Well, not really. The Xenon flash camera and 720p video will keep me waiting for N8.

  • http://www.symbianworld.org Norman John

This is what I wanted – seing your thoughts. I am a Nokia fanboy for ages and it was quite hard for me writing these thoughts and finding reasons iPhone lovers may use. Of course, features like USB ob the go, the 12 megapixel camera with a awesome xenon flash is second to none!

However, it is a fact that the N8 cannot playback divx videos and that the OS lacks behind

  • Anon E. Mouse

You need to check your facts again. It’s been all over the web for a couple of weeks now that the N8 WILL have native divx support. And the only thing lacking in the OS is the eye-candy that the iPhone and Android based phones have. Personally I could care less about eye-candy. Function is more important to me than form. So it doesn’t have fancy icons or the font looks like it’s from 2006. All of this can be changed/customized to the users preference. I’ve changed the fonts on my Nokia 5800 many times. I have friends with iPhones who can’t even do that. I’m not knocking the iPhone or Apple. If you want to play in their closed ecosystem, by all means go ahead. I on the other hand choose to play elsewhere.

  • http://www.symbianworld.org Norman John

Regarding divz, a Nokia speaker said, that DivX is not supported. Hence, we checked the facts!

It may be that you and other hard-core-users do not care about eye candy but many of the people who bought the iPhone did it because of the eye candy and the easy usage. Also many users do not care if it is a open ecosystem or if the OS is open source.

  • LouisLoh

Look here dear. You’re saying, ‘since most of the non-geeks love eyecandy, I, as a blogger, would advise you not to buy the N8 because it doesn’t have any’.

So, if many users do not care if it’s open source but only if there’s eyecandy, you go with their flow?

Are you an average user? Are you ill-informed like them? Isn’t it the duty of you bloggers and journalists to EDUCATE the end-users? Why are you following their call instead?

You can carry on with your ways, justifying your advice with the masses’ opinions, but I’m sure with that you lose all your credibility.

    Thanks.

  • http://www.symbianworld.org Norman John

But let’s face it, many people don’t care if it’s open source or no – it works, looks good and makes fun. This is what most people see when they get an iPhone. When they get an N97, they say, where is the multitouch. When, however, geeks egt their hands on an N97, they see all the potentialwith open source.

Frankly, it’s Nokia#s job to educate the user and I try to cover both, good and bad sides of the device. Take a look at the recent market shares and how Nokia, unfortunately, is loosing more and more in the smartphone market. long time Nokia users and even Nokia-bloggers jumped from the ship and now love the HTC Desire or the iPhone 4. I am a Nokia and Symbian lover, I hope you did not misunderstood my article. It was just to have a balanced and not biased coverage. Earlier we talked about reasons why to wait for the N8:
    http://symbianworld.org/4776-reasons-why-i-should-wait-for-nokia-n8/

    Best regards,
    Norman

  • Tushar

Why the fuck this guy hipes the iphone so much.None of the companies can compete with nokia cos it the grandfather of phone companies.Nokia N8 deliverers features in so low price that no one does.i hate iphone and apple as well

  • iponok

Interesting read there, been on Gsmarena noising people up all day about this, some very funny responses.
While I have used Nokia from day one the N97 has totally put off them. I now use the HTC Desire and it has been a month of pure bliss, not once has it thrown up Memory Full or System errors, I’ve not had to do a reset yet nor has it frozen up on me. So I now know what it feels like to have a proper working smart phone.
Anyway N8 with all it’s uber scuber cameras and hdmi still does not capture my imagination. Don’t like the design S^3 UI is still dull, and having seen a video on youtube showing the phone in action, similar problems still exist Memory Full, System error please shut down the phone, it was awful, brought back bad memories of the N97.

  • http://www.symbianworld.org Norman John

Perfect comment there iponok. I mean exactly this ;)

  • http://twitter.com/ovijade Jade Bryan

The point of the article is obviously to show that we are not biased on the N8. Nokia wants to hear feedback whether its positive or negative. It’s a healthy way that Nokia would listen to their customers rather than correcting their mistakes without taking any consideration on our side (mass).

On the FPS issue, yes its true that 24fps is the standard for blue ray, cinema and our eyes, but let’s face it that we should move on from that and we should have more than on that. We will not forever stay in that standard and if Nokia wants to put that feature on the spotlight, then OPK or any from company should highlight it to the mass.

For DivX issue, we posted about it that Nokia N8 will have a DivX support http://symbianworld.org/4766-confirmed-nokia-n8-will-support-divxxvid/ but later we posted a correction because the source had been told by a Nokia staff that N8 will not have DivX out from the box: http://symbianworld.org/4796-nokia-n8-does-not-support-divxxvid-natively/

  • n95user

i’d like to point out that open source means that people can create and upload they’re own apps to share….for free. i can honestly say i have never paid for an app on my n95 ever. i just did a yahoo search and found what i needed. i don’t care about games, that what portables are for. i don’t need to take the lights off in my house because, well, i’m smarter than that. and a tip calculator? i can do simple math in my head in seconds. the n8 has a great camera; perfect for me cuz i cant drag my dslr around with me everywhere. mp3 players are getting impossibly small and have great battery lives. and i love the symbian UI. its more organized to me. i HATE the iphone UI and andriod doesnt appeal to me, because it looks kinda like the iphone UI (+notification bars). and whats everyone’s deal with speed and lag? im sorry but forget you, like +/-3 seconds is going to kill you. i’m wondering if these people have ever been asked something and replied “hold on for a couple seconds”? patience is a virtue. and about the 24 frames per second; aren’t movies filmed at 24 frames per second? thats what i thought. the Canon EOS 5D Mark II ($2500) was used to film the season finale of “House M.D”, it records at 24fps. the eye can only pick up so much of what it sees, after that all you’re really doing is paying for bragging rights; and they’re not cheap. nokia has it right, they’re building a machine based on what humans can do, not what they can build. software crashes? that doesn’t bother me. a phone is a phone, maybe a camera and make do mp3 if push comes to shove. i really dont need a million apps, i have a brain and i like to use it. i have an imagination, so i dont need something to entertain me everywhere i go. i also have freedom, i can customize my world. and thats the way i like it. adieu =)

ps. i’d also like to add with the amount of time the majority of people spend staring at a monitor of any kind (tv, cellphones, camera screens, in the car, on the bus, etc), your eyesight isn’t perfect. buying a product who’s specs are calculated and tested by a machine (ahem, better than perfect) and expecting that you’ll be able to see the same thing is…stupid.

  • n95user

i’d like to clarify one thing, when i said “i don’t need to take the lights off in my house because, well, i’m smarter than that.” i was referring to the iphone app that lets you control your house lights from other places, over the internet (like that’s not a bad idea). thank you.

  • Travis

I own a Nokia 5800. At the time i bought it it was a better choice than an iphone.
Comparing technical features and price. Usability and style was worser than iphone,
but doesn’t matter for me. I bought it to use it, not to show it.

Now the iphone is better in nearly all points except price.
Theres sadly left no reason to buy an Nokia N8. ;(

Nokia has the technical knowhow to build great phones.

    What they need:
    1. A new Product-Designer
    (The X8 Looks like a Casio Watch of the 90ies http://www.casio-europe.com/de/watch/collection/aq-230a-1dmqyes/ )
Hey Nokia i am a Designer if you need one please contact me!

    2. Nokia has to switch to Android as soon as possible!
Otherwise they will no longer exist in smartphone market.

  • http://www.symbianworld.org Norman John

Also Chris, danke für diesen super Kommentar

  • http://www.

(Datenschutz, Monopolausnutzung, freier Wettbewerb, Zensur, etc)

  • Nedjo

what’s with people on mobile sites/blogs and the frequency of SoC’s (System on Chip) that powers Smart/Super phones!?

    There’s a HUGE difference between 600 MHz Arm 11 CPU inside, say E52, and 600MHz Cortex-A8 inside N900 or N8!!

Frequency in this case is TOTALY irrelevant!

And 1 GHz, or 680 MHz it really makes no difference from the user experience standpoint!

    BTW
we’re yet to see OMAP ( Texas Instruments SoC’s that Nokia uses) on 1 GHz (Dorid X)

  • Gran Turismo

Well, I paid too much for my N97, and I want a very good smartphone, with no breaks for full use, the Iphone doesn’t like me, but the Desire is in my mind all day (680U$D) is a good decision to move to the Desire u say? Thanks bro!

I made similar topic in dailymobile.se weeks ago…
    http://forum.dailymobile.se/index.php/topic,23894.new.html#new

  • Gran Turismo

In example, NVIDIA/3dfx put out a demo that runs half the screen at 30 fps, and the other half at 60 fps. The results? – there is a definite difference between the two scenes; 60 fps looking much better and smoother than the 30 fps.

I am waiting. because other phones doesnt bring be the key features that I want:
    - perfect BT voice dialing
    - gps without data connection
    - good camera
    - the best signal

  • Gran Turismo

    BT voice dialing?
    For GPS use GarminXT
Good Camera, yes the only right thing of the N8
    The best signal?

  • Eric J R

I was excited by the prospect of the Nokia N8 until the announcement that the upcoming flagship phone for the company will be sporting an operating system that is declared end of line and obsolete. My experience with the Ovi Store as a current owner of an E71x has been a cross between a comedy of errors and a tragedy. I have had more success in finding apps through googled third party providers, and the apps I’ve acquired are far from current. It is plainly evident that no developer worth his weight in code will continue devolping for a terminally ill OS, so why would I buy a phone that has no future in the developer community? The siuation with Nokia is very disappointing. I transitioned to a Nokia product after several years with a Motorola Q9h….it looks like Motorola has displayed better fitness in the smartphone ecosystem, and I look forward to returning to their fold.

  • sptt

    Well

Most are trues but still, when talkin bout recording its kinda not fair…N8 got decent 12mp(u can take advantage of digital zoom here) snapper with xenon. Sure, recording capabilities are important but its kinda unfair compare its camera with ip4.

Next thing. Divx. From what i can tell it ll be supported. I ve also seen video on utube when one guy was showing playback of mvk video(hopefully it was true;) ).

One more thing but hardware. Symbian dont need such “cutting edge” procesors, because of its architecture(and 3D chip seemes do be doing good job). Sure u can see 1Ghz snapdragons in many flagships these days but these phones do have higher procesing power requirements.
(thats what it should be at least. I didnt have N8 in my hands, so cant tell if its that snappy as ip4 or samsung wavem but on utube its looking preety good).

Someone was mentioning no devs ll make apps for dead OS. Kinda disagree. QT has been realesed not so longa ago. With it devs can make apps working on ANY phone supporting QT.

N8: 3D gaming (yes) sims 3, need for speed, asphalt 5, etc… best hardware specs(yes) user friendly(yes) because everything is opened like a pc,but mostly because of symbian OS. symbian^3 has many changes, but many try to hide them and lie about them by tellin that it’s just same as old versions. important note, Steve Jobs may say iPhone4 has 100 of changes, but still for me it looks same and do same things just like other previous versions. Like fake multi task. Wallpaper for background, bluetooth file transfer. N many more.. i heard that Appstores’ 50 percent of apps are dublicated and only 25 percent is productive. For example: there may be only one application to read just one story and another app is for next story. I hope OVI store is not like that.
    nokia N8:
USB 2.0 via MicroUSB,USB On-The-Go,Bluetooth 3.0,Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n,FM transmitter,TV-out,HDMI out with Dolby Digital Plus audio,GPS with A-GPS. probably most of them are not in iPhone 4gee.
    Screen
    640 x 360 px (nHD), 3.5″ capacitive, multi-touch display with
    Active-matrix OLED technology
    Camera
    12 Megapixels (main) w/Xenon flash, 16:9 720p video, 25 FPS(perfect for my eye)
I take N8, because it is everything.

there are a lot of mistake in making your info…and about the icons, make your own theme or download some themes(the appearance of an icon will be based on its current theme usually)…base on my view…nokia n8 is a like a combination of a smart phone and a digital camera already…2 in 1…it comes in handy, don’t you think so? and i’m still planning on buying n8.

some mistakes from my past post…there are a lot of mistakes in your info about n8

but there can be fake. so need wait. to the time we wait. there will be some new better phones and nokia will not be so good as it was.. so don’t buy anything and wait for 2014 year :)

  • CH4:D

    Some myths here:
    1.) Purely a subjective insight
    2) iPhone 4 does 720p – Then what? You can’t play it on TV because the Apple-exclusive cable costs a small fortune. So that would mean you have to transfer it to a PC? Where’s the “mobile” in it’s mobile phone now? Oh, let’s not forget the death grip. Vivaz PRO – resistive touch screen. Stone age. Also criticized for its UI. BOO!
    3) Why don’t we stop buying cellphone then if we keep the “there’s always something better” mindset? You’re buying a phone because you want it NOW not LATER.
    4) I had no problems playing DivX on my N8. Hmm?
    5) Just like Android and iOS, seek and you shall find. ;)
    6) You get what you pay for. No reason to expect a 1Ghz cpu if you just paid for $450 for a smart phone. Personally, I have my own limits as to how much I’m shelling out for gadgets. iPhone is up there with the Ferrari and the BMW in my book. I could buy it but it would be unreasonable. I would go for the iPod touch though. Owned the 2 versions for 3yrs now.

Still, I agree with the very sad fact that Nokia needs to step up its game – BIG TIME. They can’t make “close call” products like the N8 and the remains-to-be-seen E7.
