Nowadays almost every mobile phone has a camera. One of the best at the moment is definitely the Nokia N95. But not every mobile phone has such a good camera – e.g. the Nokia E65. The E65 is conceived for business-users, that means that the camera isn’t one of the most important things in the phone – the most important things for a business user are the communication, internet and calender features.

The E65 features a no-name camera with 2 megapixels. The camera has no flash and no autofocus. But is the camera still good, or is it nothing special? This test will find it out!

At first I want to show you with which settings you can set up the 2 megapixel camera.

If you start the camera the application will automatically start in image-capture-mode. If you want to record a video you can choose it from the options menu or just press the navi-key to the right.

If you don’t use the camera longer than one minute, but leave the application opened, it will switch to standby-mode to save energy.

Image

You can capture images with a highest resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels and an image quality set to high. Of course you can change this settings, the resolution is selectable with 1600 x 1200 or 640 x 480 – not much settings in the resolution. The picture quality is also adjustable, here you can choose between high, normal and basic.

The camera has no flash but there’s a night mode. This mode helps you to capture better pictures in bad light-conditions.

You can turn on the sequence mode and you will be able to capture six images one after the other. You just have to press the camera-button once and the phone will take six images itself. After the pictures are taken you will get to a menu where you can see the images taken a few seconds before. In this menu you can also decide which photos you want to keep in your memory and which you want to delete.

The camera-application includes also a self-timer with that you can let the handset make a photo by itself. You can choose between 10, 20 and 30 seconds till the image will be captured.

There are several more modes in the adjust-menu. Here you can choose between white balance and colour tone.

In the white balance menu you can choose between automatic, sunny, incandescent and fluorescent. Sunny is for pictures outside while the sun is shining a lot, incandescent is for pictures in rooms with a normal lamp and finally fluorescent is for pictures in rooms with a neon tube.

In the colour tone menu you can choose normal, sepia, black & white and negative.

Video

The E65 records videos with a highest resolution of 352 x 288 pixels at 15 frames per second. You can set the video resolution and the video length by yourself. You can change the video resolution to 128 x 96, 176 x 144 and of course to 352 x 288 pixels. If you change the length from maximum to short, you can only record videos with a maximum length of 35 seconds and a resolution of 176 x 144 pixels – perfect for multimedia messages. If you choose maximum in the length-option, you can record till your memory is full.

In video-mode there’s also a night mode, which guarantees you a better quality in bad light-conditions.

There’s a extra menu in the options list, which can not be found in the image-mode: Mute. With this point in the menu you can mute the video recording so that no sound will be recorded.

In the adjust-menu there are the same options like in the image-mode.

Verdict

The camera is good for snapshots and to record videos for Youtube. It isn’t suitable for much other things. If you want to capture images or record videos of a wedding or a birthday you better take your digital camera with you, because you won’t be happy with the result if you watch it on your large computer-screen. But if it is enough for you to watch the videos and images in your small mobile phones’ display you can take the E65 on every event to make pictures and videos with it.

A thing that very disappoints me is the missing close-up mode, because as a business-user you will have to photograph documents. So please Nokia, I hope that in the upcoming devices like the E66 and the E71 there is a autofocus or at least a mode for close-up shots like in the N80.
