27223bb318554ff9b2d199f8ac674e28 Wheres Christian?

Some of you may have noticed that I, Christian Titze, haven’t written an article since March this year. This has several reasons. One reason is that I’m very busy with school these days and so I don’t have much time to write reviews, trial gadgets and write news and tutorials here on Symbian World.
Another major reason is Nokia itself. Read the rest of this entry »

4f7541dc0eac4b569af4bb267b9b8f04 Nokia N85 Review Part 1: Introduction & Package contents

The Nokia N85 was announced at a virtual event held by Nokia on the 26th August 2008. This was about half a year ago, but now we finally got our hands on this black diamond.

Looking at it features, the device is very similar to N95, but it also has the design and gaming-features of the N81. So you can say the N85 is a mixture between both. A new thing, which we haven’t seen in a Nseries-device before, is the 2.6″ OLED-screen. This technology promises that black now finally is really black (which means that it is darker than in the screens before), it needs less battery and the colors are closer to the reality. However, the N85 does have a big amount of features, to name just a few: FM-transmitter (to stream your music from your mobile phone straight to your radio), 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Optics and dual-LED flash, VGA video recording at 30 frames per second, dualslider (known from the N95), S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 and W-Lan.

Stefan from intomobile has taken a few images with the camera of a Nokia E75 prototype. As you can see, the pictures are really good for an Eseries-device (remember: It’s a prototype, not a final device!) – from further Eseries-device we were used to crappy camera’s, but it seems that this time is over.

The Nokia N85 is very similar to the N81and the N95 – it has the design and gaming-features of the N81 and the dualslider as well as the multimedia-features of the N95. It also has the glossy, black housing known from many Nseries-devices (e.g. N81 (8GB), N96, N78). Nowadays almost every Nseries device looks like this and so the N85 is not a very special device in my opinion. I think Nokia should think about changing their design – the black finger-print-magnets become very boring and if every device looks the same it’s also very boring. Actually I can’t say that the N85 is an ugly device, but it just looks like every other Nseries-handset. However, I’ve made a huge image-gallery showing the device from every angle. Lean back and enjoy!

With the 5800 Nokia has made a step into the right direction – I think that nobody thought that this mid-tier touchscreen-device would be such a good-selling product when it was launched, but now after a few months we definitely can see that everybody wants one. First the device was launched in Moscow, the result: It was out of stock just a few hours after it hit the shelves. Then there was a special christmas-campaign in Germany, the result was the same as in Moscow: The device was out of stock after a few hours.

However, now the device came to Shanghai – of course with the same massive boom as in Russia and Germany. Watch the video above to take a look of what happened on the launch-day of the 5800 XpressMusic in Shanghai!

I just received the Nokia N85 and as usually the first thing we do here on Symbian World, is to make an unboxing video and pictures. The video below is also available in HD, to watch it click here.

The Nokia N85 seems to be a mixture out of the N95 and the N81. Its box mainly advertises the N-Gage gaming abilities of the device. It comes with a few pre-installed trials of N-Gage games which you can play. You can activate the game you like most for free with a code that comes with the device, so that you have a full-version and not just a demo of it.

I have been using the E71 for a very long time now. After all the weeks with it I’m very happy with the phone and its features. Unfortunately there are also some huge cons compared to Nseries-devices. In this post I want to show you what Nokia could make better in a possible successor for the phone.
