After over a year of debating, discussion and waiting Nokia, well more accurately the N-Gage Arena Administrator Redrum, has announced that the N-Gage platform will drop support for the highly popular N93 and N73.

The N93 and N73 were the first two main devices to announced as official N-Gage Devices and N93 was the most “tech-guy” phone around and seemed perfect with its moveable screen for gaming and was also often shown in videos. The N73 was a phone for basic people who liked the game so both phones were perfect for N-Gage, and over the year of discussion both grew a huge fanbase and userbase – mainly because of the low prices and high specifications.

Well now that TA (Team Arena) has confirmed that the N-Gage will not support the N73 and N93 this means the users who have these devices, and are currently waiting for N-Gage to become available, will now have to upgrade to a newer more advanced handset.

However if this was announced a year ago this would have been even worse news then than it is now, mostly because the other devices, such as the N95 and the N81 were still heavily priced and were harder to get hold of in certain countries but now there is a variety of different devices to choose from including newer Xpressmusic edition phones.

This also means that people caught playing N-Gage games on N73’s and N93’s will most likely get banned from the N-Gage Arena as this would mean they have a modded application (or device) which of course is illegal.

Anyway if you want to check out the full statement from Redrum you can read it here.

The Nokia Beta Labs really stand for funny, useful and inoviate applications. Now they introduced Nokia Magnifier. It uses your phone camera as a magnifier to improve the readability of fine prints such as billings or bookpages. Nokia Magnifier has a built in stabilizer to reduce the effects of a shaky hand and negative filter enabling users to switch from light to dark backgrounds improving readability. By using the existing camera technology, users can also snap a picture of the enhanced image for later reference. Of course this application is free for download. However, it doesn’t work on the new S60 Feature Pack 2 devices devices but only on devices like the N95, N82 or the E90.

I am a user of Nokia mobile-phones for several years by now. Actually I had many problems with the build-quality and other issues of all the phones by Nokia I have used. Unfortunately the time has gone by and not much except the features has changed. So I decided to write a post about all the issues I am „enjoying” with the company Nokia.

1.) The build quality

We all know that many Nokia mobile phones have issues with the build quality. Some very significant issues are the wobbly slider of the N95, the internal keyboard of the E90 that touches the huge internal screen and the chrome of the N76 which is peeling off.

2.) Bugs & Firmware updates

Some of the newer models, e.g. the N96, are having many problems with the software. Thus Nokia is releasing firmware updates to improve the general stability of a device but also to fix those bugs. If you don’t want to use a phone full of bugs you need to update your firmware. With a fast internet connection this shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes. The update itself isn’t the problem as you can see, but if you’re updating your phones’ firmware all the userdata and applications on the internal memory will be deleted, which means that you have to reinstall all the applications, setup the device as if it was taken out of the box for the first time, and finally all your messages and so on will be deleted for ever.

3.) Nokia’s service

Since most of the users don’t want buggy, ugly or wobbly phones they’re bringing them to a Nokia Service Center or back where they’ve bought them. There are reports that users have been waiting on their fixed phones to come back for over two months. I also experienced this long waiting-time with my N95-1, I waited three weeks for it to come back.

4.) User experience

Doing everything manually (update your applications, sync your contacts with your memorycard, etc.) can be very annoying after some time. There’s not much eye-candy and so the whole device seems to be made without any „love”.

Suggestions for Nokia on how to make all the things better:

1.) The build quality

The only thing I can say on this topic is: Make better tests with your phones, not only if they can stand crashes, but also if the slider is shaking, if light shines through the gaps or if the chrome peels off after some time.

2.) Bugs & Firmware updates

Look at Apple’s iPhone and you know how firmware updates should be. Installing the update without losing any personal data is the point. The users don’t want to install everything again when they’re updating the firmware.

What about a programme like iTunes? It synchronizes everything with the phone by just one click. All the data is back-uped by just connecting your phone to the computer, loss of important data is almost impossible with this method.

3.) Nokia’s service

Service shouldn’t take much time. This is the service I would like to see at Nokia (this is no dream, other companies can do it. So why should Nokia can’t do it?): 1. Report your problem on a website > 2. Wait until a Nokia employee has checked your problem and decided what to do > 3. get packaging material from Nokia > 4. send the device back to Nokia > 5. Get a new device within 3 workdays.

This is possible! Apple’s support showed it to me when I had problems with my iPod. So come on Nokia, you also can do it!

4.) User experience

As I said in point 2.) before, look at the iPhone. If there are updates available for applications there should be a little information window which says: „New versions of AB and XY are available. Do you want to update?”.As also said before, develop an application like iTunes which does everything you want to do with just one click. Last but not least, build more eye-candy into your Symbian S60 OS.

As you maybe noticed there are many suggestions to copy the simplicity of Apple’s products, but this is not because I’m a Apple-fanboy, I just think that the user experience that comes with their products is the best of all manufacturers.

Because there are so many of those, and not everyone does even know of them, we decided to write this guide for you.
Some of the following codes can reset your phone or change settings, so please make sure to know what you’re doing with entering a code – there’s a description below every code, read it first! Besides the following codes we also give standard knowledge like how to open the Task-manager or switch the profile in an instance.

As you maybe know, Nokia announced a bunch of devices at the Mobile World Congress this year. One of them, the N78, is according to Nokia the new N73 successor. The N73 was or is one of the most sold Nokia devices although it was never a flagship. However, there is just another device which could be the perfect successor. I’m talking about the Nokia 6220 Classic. I want to find out which device earns to be called the real N73 successor:

First off, what does the next N73 need? Of course a good camera, good, a special design, good keys and a reason why the average user would buy it.

Camera:

In terms of camera the N78 offers a 3.2 megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens and autofocus, just like the N73 does. More over, you can geo-tag your pictures using the built in GPS. This means that the location the picture was taken is saved in the picture’s file. The 6220, however, features a 5 megapixel camera also with autofocus, a pretty bright Xenon flash we all know from the N82 and a Carl Zeiss lens as well. Either than that it has just the same camera functions as the N78 (including geo-tagging). Unfortunately, N78’s lens is unprotected whereby 6220 has a great camera shutter.

Winner: 6220

Form factor:

Both, the 6220 and N78 are pretty handy. The N78’s dimensions are 113 x 49 x 15.1 mm and has a weight of 101.8 g. The 6220’s size is 108 x 47 x 15 mm and its weight is 90g. It’s clear that the 6220 is ways smaller and lighter than the N78. But both devices feels great in your hand and are pretty handy. This is a aspect which is really important for the average user.

Winner: Both

Design:
Well, design depends on the point of view but nevertheless you can see clear differences between both phones. The N78 is rather timeless and at the same time pretty stylish. So, it’s perfect for every age, whether for teenagers or the busy business man. Honestly I can’t describe 6220’s design. It’s neither timeless nor has it a clear design but nevertheless it’s kind of fresh. I think, the average user would choose the N78.

Winner: N78

Keys:

A pretty important thing for the average user are the keys. As you can see from the picture, the 6220 has big keys whereby the N78 has really small and thin keys which need some time to be used properly.

Winner: 6220

N78’s special feature:

The N78 offers a build in FM-transmitter which allows to transmit your music to your FM radio, for example in your car. This is pretty nifty and useful.

6220’s special feature:

Like the N82 or the N95 also the 6220 offers the TV-out function which allows to connect a TV-set with your 6220 and display everything on the large TV. This is especially useful when showing videos or pictures on a large TV.

Other important things

The N78 offers a 2.4” screen and due to WiFI fa fast Internet connection. Unfortunately, the 6220 has just a 2.2” screen and no WiFi. However if you love recording videos with your device you should choose the 6220 since it records videos with VGA quality and 30 frames per second.

Verdict:

Who is the real N73 successor? This is a question you have to decide on your own. Both devices offers a huge amount of features. However, if you need a powerful camera and video replacement you’ll totally love the 6220. The N78 however, allows fast internet thanks to WiFi and offers a bigger screen plus an built in FM-Transmitter. What do you think? Tell me your opinion.

You all know the procedure of signing unsigned apps. Everytime you get a new unsigned application you have to sign it by yourself and this is very annoying.
But now it seems that S60 3rd has been hacked:

How to: Make the application “free”
How to: Install the application

Very brief, but this news are worth a post.

Most of the applications are freeware, but you also have to pay for some. If you miss an application, then leave a comment and tell me why I should add it to my top ten applications. If you can’t get enough from 3rd party application you should jump over to ‘‘Freeware Downloads‘‘ where you can find a lot more applications

Of course you can use these applications on every S60 3rd phone.

You are annoyed of your phone because it has a simlock or is from a provider, so that you can´t update your firmware as soon as the update comes out?

So, in this tutorial I will show you how to change your product code. If you change your provider-product code to a free product code you have a branding-free mobile phone.

At first I want to say, that you shouldn´t change it if you have no knowledge of your device. Only change it if you know what you are doing!

If you make something wrong, you could damage your phone and if you have changed the Product Code you won´t have warranty anymore. So first think exactly about what you´re doing.

!!!IMPORTANT: Don´t make a backup over the integrated backup-function of your phone before changing the PC (Product Code), because after that nothing will work anymore.!!!

For every phone there are different PC´s. You can find them in the internet via google, here is a list of some product codes.

Here an important list of the included languages in the different PC´s:

EURO1: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese
EURO2: English, French, German, Turkish, Dutch, Italian
EURO3: English, Czech, Slovakian, German, Polish, Hungarian
SCANDINAVIA: English, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Danish
BALTIC: English, German, Estonian, Russian, Latvian, Lithuanian
RUSSIA: English, German, Ukrainian, Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian
BALKANS: English, German, Croatian, Slovenian, Serbian, Greek
ARABIC: English, Arabic, French, Farsi, Urdu
HEBREW: English, Hebrew, Arabian, Russian, Romanian, Spanish
AFRICA: English, Portuguese, German, Italian, French

Let´s start with changing your Product Code… (*click on the screenshots to enlarge them)

1. Download Nemesis Service Suite here.

2. Now install NSS on your computer.

3. You have installed NSS succesfully on your computer? Okay, let´s start with changing your PC.

4. Start NSS, then plug your device into the computer and choose “PC Suite”. Now click on “scan for new device” in the top right corner of NSS.

5. Now NSS should have found your device.

6. Click on “Phone Info”

7. Enter the PC you want on your phone, then mark “Enabled” and click on “Write”.

8. Now you have changed the PC of your phone and you can close NSS.

As you can see it is very easy to change your phones Product Code.

If there are any problems leave a comment.

Finally, MobiTubia is available for the public. After a long trial period, everybody with a suitable phone can download MobiTubia, a great YouTube client. I’ve already took a brief look at MobiTubia and I have to say that it’s a kick ass application.

Anyway, after you have set up everything you can start to stream your videos straight from your phone. I’ve tested it with my N95 and it works great.

Blogging is nowadays pretty popular – everybody is blogging about everything. Since I’m blogging for Xonio and have to study a lot, I’ve just little sparetime, therefor I’m writing more and more articles on my phone. I don’t post them directly from the phone but I create them on my phone. Here are 3 things, making mobile blogging pretty handy and convenient. By the way, this post was written on an N95 8GB

1. SU-8W

The Nokia SU-8W is a handy but nevertheless a great gadget. Connected to your Nokia smartphone you can write articles just like you’re used it from your computer keyboard at home. Furthermore it’s not only for blogging butfor emailing and other text messages.

2. DT-22

If you’re filming a lot with your phone, for example unboxing videos, interviews, previews or podcasts, you should take a look at the Nokia DT-22 Tripod. It’s the perfect accessory for almost all camera phones and also for normal cameras.

3. Software:
Before you can start writing and publish an article, you need an application you can write with. You have two ways – posting directly from your phone or create it on your phone and post it from your computer.

Write on the phone and post on the computer:

The pre-installed Quick Office version doesn’t allow you to edit or create a file ( Nseries). Therefore you need to upgrade it or to look for another program. I’m using Office Suite which is a great replacement.

Write and publish straight from your phone:

For writing and publishing articles straight from your device you need a client that is suitable for your blog provider. I’ve found for Typepad blogger and Wordpress blogger a suitable application.

I found a very cool freeware application called MemCheck, it is a nice alternative to other programs that shows you the free memory and RAM.
It shows you RAM, Free/Max volume of C:\ and E:\
Note that you have to sign it by yourself because it´s unsigned.

Let´s start…

Works on all S60 3rd devices except those with built-in memory like N95 8GB or N81 8GB!

1. You need: A Nokia S60 3rd device, something to write, a cardreader or USB-cable and of course your computer.

2. At first download a explorer like Y-Browser or similar and install it on your device.

3. Then start your explorer and go to Z:/resource/Fonts

4. Now you need something to write. Write down exactly the names of all the fonts in this folder (nohindisnr60, S60ZDIGI, …)

5. Choose the font that you want on your device. It should be a *.ttf file. You can download fonts e.g. here. You can also take a file from your computer, if you use windows they´re all in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts

6. Make a new folder called “Fonts”, and copy the font you´ve chosen in this folder. Paste it as many times as you need it and rename it exactly like the names you´ve written down before (nohindisnr60, …)

7. Take out your memorycard or connect your device to the computer and choose data transfer.

8. Go to your memory card (E:\) and create a new folder called resource if it isn´t there yet.

9. Now copy the folder “Fonts” you´ve made before and paste it into the resource folder on your memory card.

10. Switch off your phone and put in your memorycard. Now turn on your phone again.

11. Congratulations, you changed the font on your device!

To reset the font, just turn off your phone, take out the memorycard and delete the folder “Fonts” on it. Put it in again and restart the phone.

!!!VERY IMPORTANT: Do NOT change the fonts on your phonememory (C:\), only on your memorycard (E:\)!!!

If there are any questions leave a comment.

I have downloaded SPmark for Symbian OS v9, installed it and turned the devices off. After 10 minutes I turned them on ( N95, N82, N81 8GB, N95 8GB and N73ME) and started the benchmark. Here are the results of each device(screenshot). Besides the screenshot and the device name, you can see the best score, I ever scored with this device, for exaple N95 ( 6881).

I think all of you know the problem of losing all applications after updating the firmware. You have to install each application once again which takes a long time. However, now Vaibhav over at The Symbian Blog, has found a great freeware application called InstFast. It reinstalls the applications after a firmware update. Therefore you have to place the sis, sisx and jar files in a folder and InstFast will install them. However, you have to sign the application with your developer certificate before installation. Unfortunately you have to change your phone´s date back to a point before 31.12.07, otherwise the application won´t work.

Sony Ericsson’s P1i is a multitalten. The business smartphone has not only a QWERTZ keayboard, however, also a 3.2 megapixel camera. But how good is this camera? To show how good or bad this camera is, I’ll compare the P1i with the N73ME. Both have a 3.2 megapixel camera and autofocus. The only difference between them is that the N73ME has a Carl Zeiss lens which improves the pictures a lot. Nevertheless I want to show you, whether P1’s camera can keep up or not.

Left: P1i right: N73ME

Verdict:
You can see, that the Carl Zeiss lens causes much more better pictures. N73ME’s pictures are much brighter although I’m haven’t used the flash. However, the pictures taken with the P1 aren’t bad at all.

Do you know the problem? You can’t find you phone and you don’t know if it’s stolen or if you just forgotten it in your favorite pub or wherever? You could either go to your provider and lock the SIM card or hope that you’ve just forgotten it in the pub. However, isn’t there a much easily way to ensure that nobody use your phone, make calls or send SMS and so to affect your bill?

Yes, there is one – Txt2Lock!

What is Txt2Lock?

Txt2Lock is a new innovative security application for your Mobile Phone. For £7 Txt2Lock puts you in control of your handset removing any worry and concern about your phone bill, data and privacy as a result of loss or theft. Txt2Lock will also work in any country and on any Mobile Network protecting you wherever you may be. Txt2Lock works on near every Nokia S60 phone. Check if your mobile is also supported and jump over to the developer site to buy this great application.

How it works:

After you bought Txt2Lock and installed it on your phone, you can see the Txt2Lock icon in the menu. Now you have to enter your activation code and your 6 digit PIN1. This PIN1 is really important and I advise you to note this PIN1 somewhere (not in the phone).

The program itself offers you just one real option. Changing the lock status to off ensures you that one can’t make calls, write SMS or go to the Internet. However, if your phone is stolen or you don’t know where to find it you have two possibilities – Lite Lock or Max Lock. Lite Lock encrypts your memory card and locks all outgoing activity. Max Lock disable the screen and bar all activity on the handset.

Lite Lock:
To activate a Litelock, text your personal secret 6 digit PIN1 plus *1 to your handset. For example 123456*1

Once the SMS is received your handset is locked for all outgoing activity and your memory card is also encrypted.

There’s no warning or alerton the handset that a Litelock has been activated.
To unlock Litelock, open the application, enter your personal secret 6 digit PIN1, scroll right to settings and change lock status to off.

Max Lock:
To activate a Maxlock, text your personal secret 6 digit PIN1 plus *2 to your handset. For example 123456*2

Once your handset receives the text your handset is completely locked and can’t be used for anything.

This is evident by the Txt2lock logo( picture above) on the screen.

To unlock Maxlock press the red key, than the left soft key, enter your personal secret 6 digit PIN and finally just press the right soft key. Now your handset is restored and you can use is normally.

Verdict:
Txt2Lock is a great application which offers you a high security standard for you, your phone bill and also your personal data. It’s really easy to manage and works fine with my N95. There is no chance to fool the lock and even when you pull out the battery and start the phone again, the phone’s still locked. If you buy Txt2Lock you have credits for 5 free SMS which is really neat due to you can check out if the software really works and you don’t have to spent money for test SMS.

However, in the moment I prefer Windows Live Messenger (MSN Client) because with the Windowns Live Messenger you can change your appearance like your name or your personal message. Besides you can sent files via Windows Live Messenger but I think that in the final version will this and a lot other usefull features be added.
