Nokia BetaLabs again released a new experimental application for your Symbian^1 device, aka S60 5th Edition. Nokia Video Cuts is a video player application with an new feature. This feature uses key frame extraction technology and allows you to see key frames of any movie and then jump straight to a certain scene. You can download the Nokia Video Cuts application, which is still in beta, here.

Nokia Video Cuts uses key frame extraction technology to separate a video’s key scenes, allowing you to jump from one scene to another with one simple click. The Nokia Video Cuts video gallery organizes your videos by title and also uses thumbnail images for easy searching. Full kinetic scrolling is smooth and snappy, and just like other video galleries, Nokia Video Cuts offers all the same functionality you would expect, like volume adjustment and full screen viewing.

However, Polarbits is offering three high quality 3D games: Raging Thunder (car racing game), Wave Blazer (power boat racing) and Armageddon Squadron (arcade flight simulator / shooter). Despite the good quality those games are free of charge. There are several gaming modes supported. A multiplayer-mode is also included. What we really like is the game-control. Using the accelerometer API you can control your boat, aircraft or car easly. Take a look at our video to see how the games work. These games work on all S60 5th Edition devices such as the X6, N97 or the Satio.

With the Nokia X6 and X3 they have introduced the new Xseries, a music orientated product-line. Apparently the Nokia X6 is supposed to be the successor of the 5800 Xpress Music, Nokia’s most popular touch-screen device. However, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the Nokia X6?

The main focus of this device is without a doubt the music capability. It comes with 32GB internal memory (there is a 16GB version available too), 32 hours of music playback, loud stereo speakers, decent headphones and on top of that a comes with music subscription is enabled for an entire year. Comes With Music lets you download an unlimited number of musics tracks for 12 months free of charge (network charges may apply). Not only can you download the music on the X6 but also to your computer. In order to prevent pirating, songs are DRM protected. The 3.5mm audio jack on the very top of the device allows you to use standard and high quality headsets.

Nokia has included a decent of over-the-ear headset (depending on country variant) with a remote-control in the box . The sound quality is good indeed and better than all other included headsets we’ve ever tested. In case you want to share your music with the people around you, you can play the music through the stereo speakers situated on the right hand side of the device. This together makes a good music bundle but unfortunately we missed the dedicated music control keys like on the Nokia X3, has. This would have tied a nice bow around this whole package. Other than that there is no way to search for songs. That is a complete no go, especially for a music phone!

We’re positively surprised of the X6’s built quality. Although more than half the device is made out of plastic, it doesn’t feel as cheap as its predecessor. There is a tiny metal stripe on the left and right side of the device, increasing the looks of the X6. The whole display area is made out of scratch-resistant glass which is a big plus. However, our testing device had two little issues. First, the keylock switch on the right hand side was shaking, which kept causing a rattling noise. Second, the battery cover wasn’t as tight as it should be. We don’t want to say that it was too loose but it actually didn’t feel stable at all. Holding the X6 in the hand you instantly notice how thin it is: It’s dimensions are 111 x 51 x 13.8 mm. On the other hand, however, it’s rather tall. Nevertheless, it feels fine in the hand.

On the feature list we don’t find anything new or revolutionary. A five megapixel camera on the back takes decent pictures and offers a bunch of settings like light sensitivity, exposure mode, contrast, sharpness, white balance, different scene modes and more.

Using Share Online you can easily upload pictures or video to services like Flickr, Ovi Share, Vox or many other services. Here some image samples for the X6’s camera:

Next to the camera, which records videos with 640×480 pixels at 30fps, there is also a Dual LED to light up the picture.

The main input method is via the 3.2-inch scratch resistive touch screen. For the very first time Nokia has used a capacitive touchscreen. Thus it doesn’t react on pressure but slight electrical current running through your finger. However, Nokia doesn’t take full advantage of this technology as for example multi-touch isn’t supported. Moreover, the whole UI seems to appear rather old and not as touch-friendly and as intuitive as other UI’s. Kinetic scrolling, to easily scrolling through list, is supported almost every, except for the menu where you actually need it, which is quite disappointing.

You can either use the full QWERTY-keyboard or the numeric on board for entering text. These are of course on-screen keyboards and no physical buttons. If you wish you can set the device so that it provides tactile feedback each time you touch the screen. All in all we found the touch screen to react quite decent but not as good as the iPhone other devices with capacitive touch-screens.

GPS along with A-GPS are on board the X6. Nokia Maps is of course preinstalled. This, however, is an old version. If you visit the Ovi Store you can download the latest Nokia Maps version that offers voice guided pedestrian and car navigation totally free, no matter where you are. The navigation works seamlessly and without any major problems.

In the Internet folder there are many shortcuts. One of which is the web-browser that works fine and displays the web pages just like you know them from your PC with flash and java content. However, there is no kinetic scrolling within the browser. I’d have to say that the web browser is pretty decent, but in no way is it perfect. Other than that there are apps like Facebook, AccuWeathr, Hi5, YouTube and MySpace. As the X6 runs on Symbian you can find thousand of apps on the Internet or via the Ovi Store. For connecting to the web you have the options of using W-Lan as well as HSDPA (3.6 MBps).

On the top you can find a microUSB port. This port is for data-transfer only. Charging over USB isn’t possible, and instead you need to use the former-standard 2mm charger.

The Nokia X6 is no revolutionary device with nothing new besides the capacitive touch screen. S60 5th Edition is still pretty clunky and continues to slow down the user experience. However, for the market it targets and the audience it aims for, it packs everything you need into a slim and compact design. By the way, you can find Nokia X6 downloads here.

Today Nokia unveiled a new version of the Nokia X6 – the Nokia X6 16GB. As the name already hints it comes with 16GB internal memory and without Comes With Music. This actually causes with 390€ a significantly cheaper price as compared to the 32GB version. Other than that it comes in four new finishes: all black, all white, white with pink highlights and white with yellow highlights. Still it has a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 5 megapixel-camera, GPS and WiFi. It’s supposed to hit the market even this quartal.

Once you pressed the save button it will create a new file and save the song. The quality of the new created file is good and can be send to your friends or can be used as a ringtone. Apparently, XpressCut is based on Phython and requires at least Python version 1.9.7. Install Python first and then XpressCut.

The most anticipated firmware update in Nokia history is due to arrive in the next few days. Firmware Version 2.0 brings not only kinetic scrolling but also more allocated storage and more widgets. In general, a Firmware update brings improvements, bug fixes and new features. However, some users aren’t aware of how to update the Nokia N97 or any other S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 or 5th Edition device. In this article I’ll show the two basic ways to update the firmware. The process is pretty simple. Either you can do it straight from your phone or using your PC.

Firmware Over-The-Air (FOTA):
Firmware over-the-air is maybe the easiest way to get the latest firmware onto your Nokia device. The advantage of this method is that it doesn’t require a desktop computer at all. In order to check for a new firmware update enter *#0000# on on the homescreen. Thereafter, click ‘options’ and choose ‘check for updates’. If a new update is available you can download and install it easily directly from this application. Simply follow the on-screen instructions to install the update. The following video shows you the whole step-by-step procedure:

Nokia Software Updater (NSU):

The second way to get the latest Firmware onto your N97 or any other S60 device is the Nokia Software Updater. After downloading, installing and running the Nokia Software Updater on your PC (which you can download here), you need to connect your mobile phone with your computer. To do this you will need to use either the mini or microUSB cable, whichever is relevant for your device, and choose the PC Suite connectivity option when prompted. Then just follow the on-screen instructions and wait until everything is done.

Things to bear in mind:
Before the update can commence you need to make sure that your phone is fully charged. More over, make a backup of all your data and settings. If you have a Nokia N97, E75 ,5800XM or any other phone that features User Data Preservation (UDP), you don’t have to make a backup as all the data and settings will be preserved. While everybody talks only about the N900 the X6 gets only little attention. However, now an official promotion clip appeared on YouTube. The video’s main focus is the gaming ability of the X6. Apparently this is strange as Symbian isn’t known as the best gaming platform. Nevertheless, the clip is nice and indeed worth a look:

Qt is a cross-platform application and UI framework. Using Qt, one can write applications once and deploy them across desktop, mobile and embedded operating systems without rewriting the source code. The beta runs on S60 3rd Edition as well as 5th Edition devices. I’ve installed it on my Nokia N97 and it looks really impressive. The focus of this release has been to stabilize the Symbian port, as well as adding a backend for the Phonon multimedia library enabling simple audio and video playback. The “Colossus” beta-release contains QtCore, QtTest, QtGui, QtNetwork, QtScript, QtSvg, QtWebKit, QtXML and Phonon as well as documentation and examples and demo.

To download Colossus straight to your phone point your phone’s browser to qt.nokia.com/phonedemo. For best performance we recommend to install in Phone memory.

It’s time for another update. We’ve just added further applications to the S60 5th Edition Download Section in which you can find tons of applications for your Nokia N97, Nokia N97 Mini, X6, 5530XM, 5800 XM, 5320 XM and your Samsung Omnia HD. Some of the new applications are MasterMind, Midomi and Labyrinth Lite. You’ve probably already seen MasterMind in the version with the colored pins in which the aim is to guess the secret code in a finite number of attempts. With Midomi you get a music recognition app which finds you the title, artist and album of any song you play, sing or hum.

The accelerometer based Labyrinth is a challenging game in which you need to move a ball through various labyrinths by moving your phone. As always, all applications are free or trial versions so don’t heasitate and head over to the Download Section.

Have you been wondering why there are more and more people talking to their phones? Giving their devices orders like: “send SMS to Norman, message hello how are you?” or “open File Manager.” Vlingo Corporation has launched their voice application, Vlingo, which allows user to instantly send a text messages and emails, call contacts, search the Web, create a “note to self” and much more, simply by speaking to your compatible S60 device. The service is available for free but can also be upgraded to a Plus Version. However, I’ll come back to both these versions later on. First I want to explain how to get Vlingo and how it works.

According to the homepage Vlingo runs on the Nokia N95, N95 8GB, E51, E71, E75, 5530 XpressMusic and the 5800 XpressMusic. Devices like the Nokia E52, E55, E71X, N81, N96, or 6120 aren’t supported yet, but you can still download and use Vlingo from www.vlingo.com anyway. You may encounter software bugs or usability issues when running Vlingo on these devices and Vlingo will also be preloaded on the new N97, E72, and N97 Mini when they are released. If you already have an N97 without Vlingo, you will be able to get Vlingo by updating your phone’s firmware to v2.0 when that is released.

How to get Vlingo:

In order to get Vlingo on your phone you have three options. Either point your phone’s browser to www.vlingo.com/getvlingo and download it from there. Or you could head over to the Ovi Store. Finally you have the option to get in front of your desktop PC and visit to www.vlingo.com, then choose Nokia, click ‘download now’ and enter your phone number. Thereafter you will receive the download link to your phone that points you the download page.

How to start Vlingo:

Once you downloaded the .sisx file and installed it onto your device, you are ready to start Vlingo. First thing you need to do in the setup is to choose your language. Currently there are four languages supported; English, Spanish, Italian and German, and you can also choose between British, American, Finnish and Australian English. Vlingo will add further languages in due course.

As Vlingo connects to the internet every time you speak to the application you need to select a network destination. However, it’s just about 1MB for every 150 times so that you don’t have to worry too much about enormous bills at the end of the month.

After checking the internet access point there is only one last thing you need to do before finishing the setup. Depending on whether you’re using a touch-screen phone or a non-touch enabled phone, you need to hold the ‘Hold and Speak’ button or the review/voice control key and say ‘’search concert tickets” and release the key. Now you’re done and ready to use Vlingo.

Vlingo’s functions and its usage:

Basicly Vlingo is all about allowing you to use your phone with the power of your voice. Instead of going to the menu and searching for the calculator you just need to say the proper words. Also starting a call, making a web search or sending a message is no problem.

In order to sent a text message just say: ”Send message to Norman, How are you today question mark.” Sending an email works in pretty much the same way, just say “email” instead of ”text message.”

To search the web just say the words you’re searching for and instantly the search engine you choose, Google or Yahoo, will pop up showing you the results. For example you could say : ”Pizza New York” and you will get the results.

Say “open calendar/music player” etc to open relevant applications.

If you don’t want to search your contact list for your buddy Mark just say ”call Mark” and you automatically be connected.

However, the question now posed is how well it works?

Opening applications works almost without any problems. After saying what application you want to open it takes about two seconds until the application actually opens. However, it does not recognize 3rd Party applications like Gravity, Nimbuzz or Sports Tracker or even pre-installed apps like the Ovi-Store, N-Gage and Photos. This indeed is a pity and I hope, although I doubt it, that Vlingo will fix it in due course. Calling contacts is easy and works seamlessly.

Depending on your pronunciation and how clearly you speak you may get misspellings when doing a web search or when ‘talking’ a message. In my test I got good but also some strange results. A Vlingo spokesman stated that “Vlingo will adapt to the person’s voice so that one will get better results in due course.” Even with background noise like music or other people speaking (but not too loud), Vlingo hears every word. All in all Vlingo works good but not perfect. It’s not a static service but a service that learns and will improve over time.

How to open Vlingo and to make a voice command:

To open Vlingo just go to the menu and search the Vlingo icon. Once you have it open you can choose if the application starts automatically or not. In order to make a voice command you need to press and hold the huge ”Hold and Speak” button on touch-devices or the physical review/voice control key on non-touch devices. Unfortunately, this is a downside when you’re using a touch-enabled device. Every time you want to make a voice command you need to go to Vlingo application first. Alternatively, you can add a Vlingo short-cut/widget to your homescreen. However, still this isn’t as comfortable as with the physical key. It’s ridiculous if you just want to open the calendar you can go straight to the calendar instead of the Vlingo application first. Non-touch devices benefit from the review/voice command key on the on the side. So you can make a voice command from everywhere in the menu as long as Vlingo is running in the background.

More to come…

Two nifty features for all social media fans will be added soon. Updating Facebook will be available in the next version and twitter in January 2010. I could already test the facebook feature and it works very smoothly indeed and is quite a bit of fun.

Vlingo vs. Vlingo Plus:

As I mentioned earlier, there are two versions of Vlingo available. The standard version is free of charge while the Plus version costs a one-time fee of £12.99/€14.99, or £3.49/€3.98€ per month. These two versions differ just from one function. You can only send 5 text messages or emails with the standard version while the Plus version allows you to send unlimited messages. Other than that there aren’t any differences. Getting the Plus version is really simple and takes just a few steps. Depending on your phone, you need to press options, and find ‘Get Vlingo Plus.’ From here you just need to follow the onscreen instructions. You can pay via your phone bill or by using a credit or debit card.

Verdict:

Vlingo does not work perfect but good enough that I encourage you to download it and test it yourself. As long as it’s free you cannot make a mistake. Vlingo gives you the chance to open applications, update your facebook status and to write a message just with the power of your voice. I’m looking forward hearing your impressions.

Kinetic Scrolling is also available and makes browsing easy and fun. In order to run XpressEXIF you need to install Python 1.9.7 first. Then, install XpressEXIF on the same disk as Python. However, I recommend installing both on the internal memory. To see thumbnail in the program it is required that the photo was loaded at least once in the standard photo browser. I’ve tried the application the 5530, 5800 and the N97. Indeed it works on all but on the N97 it shows only broken thumbnails. In case you get a ”Update is mandatory…” message don’t panic and reboot your phone. This is a freeware application so don’t hesitate and grab a copy of XpressEXIF.

The buzz around the new announced Nokia X6 is quite big although there are devices like the N900 and the N97 Mini which are drawing more attention. However, the buzz is there for a very good reason. The Nokia X6 is the first S60 5th Edition device of the new announced X-Series and can be seen as an evolution of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. With the combination of features and services provided with the device, it will definitely appeal to a very large audience.

The candybar touch screen device has a very fresh and trendy look and it really aims to reach the younger generation. Not only are the looks appealing for young users but also the service it comes with. You will get a full Comes With Music license so that you can download as much music as you want, totally legal and without any additional costs. Nokia really encourages the user to download as much music as possible with putting a 32GB built in memory into the slick Nokia X6 as well as Wi-Fi. So you can download thousands of song without even worrying about your storage. If 32GB isn’t enough, you can top up the memory with a microSD card. Due to the microUSB port being situated at the very top of the device, you can transfer your music or any other data easily between the Nokia X6 and your computer.

The 3.2-inch scratch-resistant touch display is Nokia’s first attempt of using capacitive technology in their phones. What this means is that no pressure is needed and it is enough to touch the screen ever so slightly. In other words, this means that you cannot use your fingernail, a stylus or use the device when wearing gloves. Overall the screen reacts well and is very precise.

As the X-Series also stands for Multimedia, the Finish giant have placed a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and Carl Zeiss lens on the back. Just next to the camera lens we have the already standard Dual LED flash, which can be used not only for pictures, but also for VGA video recording. Other than that, the X6 comes equipped with A-GPS, an FM-Radio, several games and a bunch of pre-installed applications. One of which is Playlist DJ; an application helping you to find the best suitable music for your current mood. If you fell happy, angry or in love, the application will find you tracks to match your mood. It goes without saying that the X6 has a 3.5mm audio jack which allows to plug in any set of headphones you like.

The X6 isn’t as small as it could be. Either Nokia would have used a bigger screen or designed the device a little smaller. In any way, it’s slightly thinner and smaller than the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and also not as wide. It’s feels really nice in the hand. Unfortunately, it’s built completely out of plastic and has no highlights or good feeling materials, which spoils the usability a little bit. This is a pity as it’s priced at about €400 before taxes and subsidies. All in all, the X6 is offering a good hardware with a fantastic software package and will hit the high streets pretty soon. At the very end I have a short hands on:

STUTTGART, Germany – Music just got a whole lot more interesting, with the introduction of the Nokia X6. 3.2-inch touchscreen? Check. 32GB of storage? Check. 35 hours of music playback? You guessed it, that’ll be a check. Did we mention the blow-your-mind design? We’ve only just clapped eyes on the sleek and sexy X6 and already we can’t keep our peepers off it. At a touch under 14mm thin, it’s slim frame packs plenty of power and will leave music lovers in no doubt as to how they’ll be listening to music on the move when the device goes on sale this side of Xmas. What’s more, the Nokia X6 is a Comes with Music device which means you’ll be able to tune into as much all-you-can-hear music as you like without having to spend a penny extra.

The 3.2-inch widescreen display is optimised for photos and videos, proving the Nokia X6 is more than just a musical masterpiece. Pack 20 friends onto your homescreen, along with communities such as Facebook and it’s also a fully connected social butterfly.

Did we mention the 35 hours of music playback? Well what about 16 days standby time, a 5-megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, TV-out, video editing, online sharing, Nokia Music store, full web browser and Flash Lite support. Still want more? Okay then, A-GPS, Ovi Maps and Playlist DJ. If you fancy a bit of gaming, then Spore is included, along with DJ Mix Tour and Asphalt4. Phew.

The addition of this device to Comes with Music takes music on the move into a totally new dimension. And we’re pretty excited about it.

The Nokia X6 is expected to ship in the fouth quarter of 2009 for an estimated retail price of EUR459 before taxes and subsidies.
