I’m happy to say that we have now started to ship out Vivaz pro to selected markets around the world. There might be slight differences in when it will be available for your market, so I advice you to check with your local operators and retailers for more detailed information.

In case you aren’t aware of the Vivaz Pro:  The Vivaz Pro comes equipped with a 5 megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, a 3,2 inch-touchscreen and a full slide-out QWERTY-keyboard. On top of that, the Vivaz Pro supports HD video recording (720p) and continuous focus which is second to none.  Unfortunately, it still runs on S60 5th Edition (Symbian^1) instead of the fresh Symbian^3. Taking a look at all Nokia N8 videos and pictures you might have spotted the nice Symbian^3 theme. I found it to look really gorgeous if you feel the same, you can download this Nokia N8 theme here on SymbianWorld. It works on all S60 5th Edition (Symbian^1) devices such as the N97, Satio or the 5800 Xpress Music.

Sportstracker is back – in a new and revised version. SportsTracker is a GPS-based application that kees track of everything from calories burned while running to your average cycling speed over altitude. This freeware application turns your smartphone a full-featured GPS sports computer. On your handset you get maps, time and distance calculators, step count, and even heart rate when you use a compatible HR belt. All data is stored in a diary so you can chart your progress, find your strengths and weaknesses, and share with others. In the future you will be able to upload your tacks to the online-service as well. Sportstracker is available for the Nokia 5800, N97, N97 mini, X6, 5230, 5235 as well as for the 5530 and can be downloaded in the Ovi Store. Hence only S60 5th Edition (Symbian^1) devices are supported,no non-touch devices yet.
Nonetheless, SportsTracker is definitely a must have application, whether you are a professional runner or just eager to know the distance from your home to your work place.

If, for example, somebody had stolen your precious Nokia N97 with really important and private data you can simply write a text message to your phone number and immediately your N97 is locked. However, first you need to activate this function.Therefore go into the menu and than choose ‘settings‘, ‘phone‘, ‘Phone mgmt‘, ‘Security settings‘, ‘Phone and Sim card‘ and finally ‘Remote phone locking‘. Once you enable it you have to define a message like e.g. ”nokian97” and afterwards verify it again. Now you have activated this function.

Will this message be sent to your Nokia N97 it will automatically lock itself and can only be unlocked with the lock code which is ”12345” out of the box. However, we do recommend to change it to guarantee that only you know the code. Again, we want to stress that this function is also supported by all other S60 devices such as the 5800 Xpress Music, E72 or the N96.

Symbian Moove is a cool little application that lets you control your music playback on your S60 5th Edition device without actually touching the phone. Based on the revolutionary eyeCan technology, you can control the UI by simply hovering your hand over your device. A simple hand gesture can silent an incoming call, navigate between GPS menus, activate the MP3 player and more. With Symbian Moove, simply place your hand over the phone to get the music started. Following the feedback from the Beta Labs community, Nokia has made some tweaks to the Ovi Contacts 1.5 client. The new release of Ovi Contacts 1.5 is available for S60 5th Edition devices, and includes a new pop-up note for incoming chat messages and support for additional file types when file sharing (contact card & presentation). You can download the new client from betalabs.nokia.com.

Battery Bot

Battery Bot observes your battery status. In case the battery is likely to drain while you sleep, it reminds you in advance to connect the charger. Otherwise you might wake up too early because of “battery low” alerts, or too late if it drains before wake-up alarm.

Reuters Social Portfolio is an open, community-powered way of looking at and tweeting about stocks. It plots tweets and news against stock data to give you an interactive picture of what the world is saying about stocks you follow. The Flash-based mobile application lets users monitor reactions of various stocks with corresponding news and social media updates. Any user can set up a FTSE stock watch-list on their S60 5th Edition Nokia handset where favorite stocks can then be accessed at the touch of the screen. Selecting a stock will open up a graphical display of the stocks performance over time in a line graph format which is familiar and easy to read. The guys over at Stuff Magazine have got their hands on the Sony Ericsson Vivas and Vivas Pro. The Vivaz Pro is the QWERTY keyboard version of the Vivaz and it still retains all the features of its sibling, barring a few key differences. The Vivas has an 8.1MP camera whereas the Vivaz Pro packs in 5.1MPs and therefore a smaller sensor to make way for it’s slide out keyboard. The Vivaz Pro is also 2mm thicker, but the best part however, is they both pack 720p HD video mode, putting it up against the likes of Samsung’s i8910 HD. The Nokia Beta Labs have today released Ovi Maps Beta for Mobile (3.04), which is supposed to make exploring new places and getting to your destination easier and faster than before. This new Beta release is mainly to improve the performance of the service. With Ovi Maps for Mobile you can also share your location with friends on Facebook and let them know what you are up to. Your status update, photo and location appear on your Facebook page and your location can be viewed on the map within the Ovi Maps Facebook Application.

Main highlights of the v3.04 release

• Improved positioning speed and accuracy
• Map zooming with faster speed
• Improved search for cities with zoom out to city level

To download all the latest data for Ovi Maps Beta for Mobile (3.04) the Beta Labs reccommend you to use Map Loader. It will automatically detect which version of maps you have and update your device accordingly. Simply follow the on-screen instructions.

Sony Ericsson was the only manufacturer that announced a new Symbian based handset during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The new Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro is an advanced version of the Vivaz, which was announced just a week prior to MWC. Apparently there are just two main differences between these two Symbian devices - a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and the downscaled 5-megapixel camera. Other than that these two devices are completely identical.

The main highlight of the Vivaz Pro is the 720p HD video-recording capabilities. Of course, this is nothing new since the Samsung I8910 HD features it already. However, there is even more about the video recording other than just the HD quality. When compared to the other smartphones, the focus of the camera on the Vivas Pro constantly adapts. Basically what this means is that everything you record is extremely sharp, whether it be a text in front of the lens or the house a couple of meters away. Even some standalone cameras with video recording functionalities don’t support this.

Although the Vivas Pro’s five-megapixel camera makes it a great camera and video recoding device, there is only a single LED flash on the back. The Satio for instance has a LED and Xenon flash which improves the image quality drastically. A Xenon flash on the Vivaz Pro would’ve made it a real winner.

On the right hand side of the device you will not only find a dedicated camera key but also a dedicated video recording key, so that you can jump straight to your desired mode without the need to switch from camera to video mode or vice versa.

The Vivaz is based on Symbian S60 5th Edition, with some Sony Ericsson based functions and customizations. One of which is the homescreen with five different panels which you can personalize as you wish.

As social media is becoming more and more significant, Sony Ericsson preloaded the Vivaz Pro with a Facebook and Twitter application. In combination with the full slide out QWERTY keyboard, using Facebook and Twitter on the Vivas Pro is a very enjoyable experience. The keyboard has four rows with relatively large keys. Finding the pressure point is easy and one can get used to the keyboard fast. On the right hand side you will find the four arrow keys as well as the enter and backspace buttons.

In terms of the size the Vivaz Pro measures in at 109 x 52 x 15 mm, not too big, and slightly smaller than the Nokia N97. It is built mainly out of plastic and there are no highlights in order to make it look and feel more desirable.

The Vivaz Pro does not support kinetic scrolling in the menu or in lists. We don’t have any information whether this will be added in future updates but thus far there is no sign of kinetic scrolling.

We must note that Sony Ericsson have finally decided to use a proper 3.5mm audio jack and microUSB port. This has always been a major hassle and a major reason to not buy a Sony Ericsson. Leaving the proprietary jack behind and replacing it with the current standard is a great step forward. The Sony Ericsson Vivas Pro is expected to be released in Q2 2010 with a price tag of 490€.

Skype for Symbian S60 3rd Edition has finally made its way out of beta, and brings with it support for s60 5th Edition handsets. If you spend any amount of time roaming or if you habitually use your mobile for most phone calls the announcement that Skype is now rolling out for Symbian is really good news. Available at launch for Nokia phones, Skype will become available on other Symbian powered models soon.Skype for Symbian will allow you to:

• Make free Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world
• Save money on calls and texts (SMS) to phones abroad
• Send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups
• Share pictures, videos and other files
• Receive calls through an online number
• See when Skype contact are online and available to chat or call
• Easily important contacts from the native phone address book

The initial Skype for Symbian client is compatible with Nokia models N96, N79, N85, 5320, 6210 Navigator, 6220, N78, E71 and 5800, N97, N97 mini, x6 and 5530. Skype will introduce a version of Skype for Symbian working with other smartphones including E63, E66, N82, N95, E51, N95,  N95 8GB, N81, N81 8GB, 6121, 6120, 5700, 6110 Navigator, E90, N76, 6290.

The Samsung i8910 Omnia HD has received a new firmware update taking it up to JB1. The new firmware brings many long awaited improvements include kinetic scrolling, web enhancements, UI optimizations to increase responsiveness and bug fixes. The Samsung i8910 Omnia HD does not sport any form of UDP as per Nokia, therefore we strongly suggest you back up all your data and memory.

Samsung has made worse the already critical lack of flash memory on disk C: By default, you now only get 17MB free after the update/reset. This is utterly ridiculous and is a huge impediment to power users while causing potential chaos for inexperienced users. If I remember rightly, the previous firmware allowed the user some 30MB or so free, so things just got dramatically worse. Quite understandably, Symbian OS starts to complain if it’s got less than 10MB of workspace free for temporary files (e.g. web cache) – starting with 17MB free is just Stupid with a capital ‘S’. And galling, in view of the fact that skilled hackers elsewhere in the world have managed to cook up i8910 HD firmwares (don’t ask how) which have up to 100MB free. Samsung, you dropped the ball here.

XpressCut is a simple but powerful application to cut and save songs directly on  your S60 5th Edition phone. Open XpressCut, select a song, set the start tag and the end. Once you pressed the save button it will create a new file and save the song. The quality of the new created file is good and can be send to your friends or can be used as a ringtone. Apparently, XpressCut is based on Phython and requires at least Python version 1.9.7. Install Python first and then XpressCut.
